NOVEMBER 1998 David Peck

Hard to believe it is November —especially when I have to write this in August due to understandably long lead times. As I await your news, this column will follow up news from Reunion. Updates on some of your new officers: President Steve Calvert joined Brown University in 1997 as their VP for alumni relations after six years at Carnegie Mellon in a similar role. The return to New England was driven in part by the need to be nearer family and in part to follow Patty's return to senior management in nursing work, first at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and more recently at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, R.I. Elder daughter Tiffany just graduated from Oberlin, majoring in art; her sister Elizabeth is in her junior year at UNH, majoring in marine sciences.

Vice President Clark Wadlow practices communications law with Sidley and Austin in Washington, D.C., and recently completed a term as president of the Federal Communications Bar Association, a group of 3,000 lawyers across the country (most in the D.C. area). He and Vicki have thoroughly enjoyed having a triple legacy experience. Ray '95 is now at the University of Virginia Medical School; Jeffrey '98 served as the lead student assigned to our class tent (he did a terrific job) and is now pondering a career in the performing arts. And Anne is a sophomore ('01), where among other things she has taken a leadership role on campus in the equestrian club. Another son, Tom, is a senior at Washington and Lee in Virginia. A favorite recent family event, for the scattering Wadlows, was a horseback pack trip into the Tetons in Wyoming. As for me, David Peck, new secretary, I am in my 16th year at Children's Hospital in Boston, serving as director of facility planning. I've recently completed a term as president of the local chapter of the International Facility Managers Association. Diane and I moved to Plymouth, Mass., in 1997 in order for her to be closer to Jordan Hospital, where she practices as a midwife. Eben just graduated from Colby College with a major in history; Matthew is a junior at the University of Connecticut. Sam, aged ten, is in fifth grade in a new charter school that I helped establish in Plymouth. I keep my singing pipes exercised in a local church choir...l want to stay in shape for our 35th! Other free-time interests include Civil War reenacting, including participation in the recent Gettysburg anniversaiy event.

And we have a new class author: Jack Noon recently published his second book, Old Sam's Thunder, wonderful ballad of a fictional Vermont town on the Connecticut River near Hanover, set in 1826. Jack has a gift for storytelling, character, and welldrawn conversation that is almost McMurtry-esque...or should I say, Larry McMurtry is almost Noon-esque. Those of us at the reunion were lucky to get auto- graphed copies for ourselves. Jack is still enjoying living in Sutton, N.H.

Other news, read or heard: Gary Horlick was recendy recognized, in a survey of international companies, as the top international trade lawyer in Washington, D.C. Stephen Feldman was recently named CFO of Urban Outfitters Inc., a specialty retailer in Philadelphia. Prior to this new post, he was VP and CFO at One Price Clothing Stores Inc. in Duncan, S.C. Larry Himes is the new president of Burlington Menswear. He had been president of Precision Fabrics Group Inc. in Greensboro, N.C. John Blair recently was inducted into the Southern California Handball Association Hall of Fame, in part in recognition for winning eight USHA tides. In his spare time he is VP for international marketing for NSA International. John lives in German town, Tenn. (a long way from California!).
