Both were born in Evanston, a Chicago suburb. They got acquainted at Dartmouth, but it wasn't until the late sixties, when they were working at Continental Bank in Chicago, that Bill Coates and Mick Friedman became fast friends. Their friendship was cut short tragically this past winter. Bill died on January 16 after a heart attack on a chairlift in Vail, Colo. Mick passed away the next month on February 7 in San Francisco, where he lived, after a year-long battle with brain cancer.
"They had a wonderful friendship," said Bill's wife, Kay, who worked with Bank of America in San Francisco, where the Coateses also lived. "They were from the same part of the country, in the same college class, and originally worked at the same time for Continental Bank in Chicago, where Bill was in international banking and Mick in corporate finance." They were also part of Los Boys de Chicago, a group of ten young Continental bankers who journeyed to Spain for the wedding of a colleague who had been transferred there.
Later they each moved to San Francisco where Bill, a Berkeley M.B.A., worked for Barclays Bank developing high-tech businesses. Mick, a Northwestern was a mergers-and-acquisitions specialist at the investment banking firm of Houlihan, Lokey, Howard, and Zukin. Bill and Kay, who were retired from banking, assisted the recently divorced Mick, taking him for doctor visits and treatments.
When Bill died, Mick helped plan and attended Bill's memorial service, January 29, at the U.C. Berkeley Faculty Club. Mick died a week later.
"Mick's keen mind and delightfully droll wit endeared him to a vast network of friends," said Hank Parker, a Denver graphic artist who prepared the Alumni Magazine obituary on Mick. Bill, a volunteer coach of the Berkeley baseball team, was to be coach of the day for the Cal-UCLA game, March 13. Cal coach Bob Milano made a short memorial to Bill before that game and placed a plaque in Bill's memory on top of the dugout.

Michael Moriarty, who replaced Richard Chamberlain this spring in Broadway's My FairLady, was asked if he has ever sung before. "I played Mack the Knife in college," Mike told the paper. "And I was very good at it." Yes, he was.
