At first glance the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine doesn't have much in common with Car & Driver, Time, and Entertainment Weekly. All, however, were recently named tops in their field by Folio, a magazine-management trade publication. A panel of magazine experts rated how clearly the contestants' mission statements were defined, then looked at how well each magazine's editorial content and creativity advanced the goal. The judges examined issues published during 1997 and selected lastyear's March "Alumnae" issue as the winning educational entry. Senior editor Karen Endicott served as editor for that issue. Earlier this year the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded the Alumni Magazine medals for general excellence, staff writing, and for Endicott's feature "The Trembling Edge of Science"[April], on the loss of chemistry professor Karen Wetterhahn to mercury poisoning.
