We just happened to run into Pat Giles recently. We were on the terrace of the House of Commons and it was a wonderful, magical evening. The setting sun was playing on the Houses of Parliament and a brisk breeze rippled the waters of the Thames. We had a few moments before Pat introduced our group to William Legge, the tenth earl of Dartmouth, and Sir Alastair Goodlad, the newest honorary members of the class of 1962. "Tell me, Pat, how long have you been living in London?" "Quite awhile, actually. You see after Dartmouth College, Tuck School of Business, and Michigan Law School, I took a job that sent me to Holland in 1968 and then to London in 1969.1 thought I might take an assignment here for a year or so, but London is such a wonderful city I couldn't imagine leaving it. I became a resident of Britain in 1972 when I joined a Philadelphia law firm as their London resident partner."

A few days later, on our tour of Oxford University, I was able to pick up the thread of our conversation. "I've worked in London for different firms, but usually in the same field. In 1991 I formed my own firm; I represent shareholders that have major interests in direct investments in companies. I have found London to be a thoroughly livable city. I've enjoyed it." Before our group left Oxford, Pat's son David, a 1998 graduate of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, showed us around his old haunts especially his favorite pub, "the Turf." And let us not forget to heap accolades on Nancy Giles, a Mount Holyoke graduate; a fellow and director of development at Hertford College, Oxford, and a charming and knowledgeable tour guide!

Another person who has become an expatriate in London is Mike Howard. After college Mike served in the U.S. Navy for three years and then went to the Graduate School of Business at Berkeley. Mike joined Levi Strauss International, first in marketing and then in general management and his work took him to Hong Kong, Sydney, Auckland, London, and Brussels. During Michael's last tour with Levi he was head of operations for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Mike explained further, "When I retired from Levi Strauss, Ngila and I decided to live in London. It's an exciting and international city and at the same time very residential*. Ngila and I have a local neighborhood and a big city simultaneously."

During our wonderful London visit Michael managed all of the details of our stay at the Chelsea Village Hotel, transport to and from many fantastic receptions and dinners, and the magnificent evening of dining and theater at Shakespeare's Globe.

John Knight was our organizer for the reception and dinner at the Institute of Directors, a fine London social and business club that was a super venue for our London gadiering. John has pursued his vocation of investment banking with great gusto over the years and came to London in 1994 to head up the London operations for Bear Steams. Since then the London office has mushroomed in size and energy. Three Dartmouth 1962 expatriates in London. Three superior hosts.
