We chatted with David H. Smith on the phone awhile ago. Dave is a plastic surgeon in Savannah, Georgia, and it sounds like he continues to be genuinelyenthusiastic about his chosen career. He takes on tough reconstructive plastic cases helping folks after disfiguring cancer surgery and accidents. Dave chose Duke University Medical School after Dartmouth College and I guess the charm of Southern living persisted. He has that wonderful lilting Southern speech that evokes a vision of steamy gardens shaded by moss-clad trees. Dave and I were fraternity brothers. We struggled through the premed curriculum, the dissection of the dogfish head and organic chemistry together. I checked the class list and learned that Davids professional outfit is Georgia Institute of Plastic Surgery; Finger, Smith, Greco & Dascombe, PC. Don't you love it? "Hi, I'm plastic surgeon David Smith, of Finger Smith. Now, let's look at this hand of yours."
David L. Smith has a hand in economics, the stock market, energy and the future. You may subscribe to his newsletter,CyclicallnvongQuarterlyReport, which he publishes from Kingwood, Texas. You can learn of Davids expert analysis through the class listserv, since he is kind enough to post his excellent newsletter there from time to time. Another listserv contributor is John L. Smith, who views life, the economy and education through the eyes of a poet and a college professor. John lives in Moorestown, New Jersey, which, by the way, is also the hometown of Manning J. Smith III. Manning and his wife, Ginny, were looking great at the last mini-reunion in October.
Clifton C. Smith and his wife, Dyane, live in Stow, Massachusetts. It seems that finance, the economy and teaching continue to stimulate Clif. J. Philip Smith lives in Orange, Connecticut, and has chaired the mathematics department at Southern Connecticut State University. Providing a bit of geographical balance in class of 1962 Smithdom, Geoffrey H. Smith lives in Marquette, Michigan, and skippers his company Tech Electronics & Computer Help, while Kenneth V. Smith lives in Batavia, Ohio.
Lets leave the wordsmithing and report about Gary A. Spiess, who recently was elected by the board of directors of Fleetßoston Financial to be executive vice president and general counsel of the corporation. In 1975 Gary joined BankBoston, before it became Fleet. Before this promotion Gary had been senior deputy general counsel. The citation by Chad Gifford, president and CEO, is fitting: "He is a seasoned legal executive and will be a highly effective liaison with our board of directors and business leaders. He has also been consistently active in the community. We look forward to his continued strong leadership in the company."
Alex Huck and Bill Pierce remind all of us that there is still time to sign up for our terrific 40th reunion June 10-13.1 hope to see you then!
