Making the cover of Time is pretty heady stuff, even when you have to share it with five Mother newsmakers. That happened in late September to Gregory Slayton '81, president and CEO of the fast growing e-marketing company Click Action, the ninth best performing stock in 1998. He is also George W. Bush's leading fundraiser in Silicon Valley. Times cover story "GetRich.com" describes Slayton's outgoing style as "a whirlwind of handshakes and high-fives." His signature phrase: 'Buddy howareyagoodtoseeypuman.'"

A century and a half after he graduated, Augustus Washington, class of 1847, made The NewYork Times' art section "Footlights." It reported on an exhibition entitled "A Durable Memento: Portraits by Augustus Washington, African-American Daguerrotypist" at the Smith soman's National Portrait Gallery and reproduced Washington's image of abolitionist John Brown [see DAM's special issue on photography, June 1999],

In late October the newswires and networks buzzed about two Dartmouth sports stars turned pro: Jay Fiedler '94 and Mike Remlinger '88. Fiedler, a backup quarterback tor four years, scored his first NFL touchdown in a Jacksonville Jaguars victory, effectively replacing the injured Mark Brunell. Meanwhile, Remlinger was an effective reliever for the At lanta Braves on their way to a hard-fought National League pennant win over the NY. Mets before falling to the New York Yankees in the World Series.
