The surprise was the women's soccer team. After going 9-8-2 a year ago, second-year coach Kelly Blaisius Knudsen '91's troops marched through the nation's third-longest unbeaten streak (15 games) all the way to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. The run ended there, against the best college team in the world, the North Carolina T ar Heels, winner of 15 of the past 18 national championships. Dartmouth's final record of 16-2 -2 included its first Ivy League title since 1993 and the first two NCAA soccer tournament games ever hosted in Hanover (a 1 -0 win against Wisconsin and a 2 -1 win against Georgia). The Georgia game attracted more than 2,000 fans to Chase Field.
Does all this mean that Dartmouth has now joined the nation's elite? "Well, there's no way that we'll take teams by surprise again," saysKnudsen. "And it's still UNC and then the rest of the country. But two things have changed. For the first time we're getting invited to tournaments by Clemson, Florida, and other teams in the Top 20. And all of a sudden we're hearing from some of the best high school athletes in the same athletes who wouldn't give us the time of day last summer. They're felling us now how much they want to play for Dartmouth."
Here's a round-up of how all of the teams fared last fall.
