June is just around the corner, land with it comes our 10th I Reunion, one year early. Perhaps you are still on the fence about going? Wondering whether you'll feel like a loser? Maybe you've been doing the same old thing for the last five years...nothing new in your life...no one new in your life....everybody else's life is so much more exciting.
Well, you're absolutely right—you're a loser! But that's okay, you can join me at my table, you know, the one in the back between the kitchen and the bathroom. And while we're sitting there, here's who we might see passing by: Heidi Julavits has waited on her last table. Last year Penguin Putnam agreed to buy her first two novels for a rumored half million—though Heidi isn't telling. She says publishers took notice after her short story, "Marry the One Who Gets There First," appeared in the April 1998 issue of Esquire. Her first novel, set in Depression-era Pueblo, Colo., promises to be a page-turner. I don't think this will give the story away, but the theme is infanticide.
Speaking of the Dead, one of our own worked on the NBC miniseries The Sixties.Kim Buresh spent last summer and fall helping to ensure the historical accuracy of the story, music, etc. She also participated in the re-creation of Woodstock and met Wavy Gravy. (Tell him I think he makes good ice cream.)
Kim's been pretty active in the last nine years. She went straight to Northwestern Law School, and then worked for Arthur Anderson for two years before packing her bags and moving to L.A. She's managed a rock band called the Abe Lincoln Story and started her own music and entertainment magazine, Not For Hire. Right now she's in UCLA's M.B.A. program, learning how to create business plans and find investors for her magazine. Best of all, she won a recent round of VH-1's Rock'n Roll Jeopardy. And I quote: "Heck, I'll break out of my modesty to even say that I had the game wrapped up before Final Jeopardy."
It's like deja vu all over again: A couple of Texans wrote to share news of the births of their second children. Bret Cartwright and his wife, Kristin (Marshall '88), welcomed Christopher Joseph last November. The three, and three-year-old Abigail, live in Dallas, where Bret works for Nations Bank. Last July Steve Dollinger and his wife, Dawn, had a son, lan Charles, who joins big sister Rebekah Anne. The Dollingers live in Houston, where Steve and a few attorneys from his previous law firm started their own practice in civil defense litigation, specializing in medical malpractice. Steve is also a deacon at the Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Steve shares news that a fellow Texan, Jim McCutcheon, left a well-established San Antonio firm to move to Redmond, Wash., and start his own practice. Jim is also taking courses at Fuller Seminary's extension campus. And catching us up on old news, Steve tells us that John Quilhot was married in Indianapolis. Brett Oeser, a Nashville attorney, was in attendance, as well as '91s Brian Daucher, best man, Brent Cromley, Keith Dangleis, and Bill Ross.
Gee, Texas must be catching, because yet another classmate, Dawn Generals, wrote to tell us that she, husband Victor '89, and their two daughters moved in 1997 from White Plains, N.Y., to Grapevine, where Dawn is a recruiting manager for the consulting and systems integration business of IBM. Her position takes her to college campuses to recruit the best and the brightest, which, as anyone who has visited one lately knows, makes her feel soooo old. Dawn is hoping to get back in touch with the following '9os: Polly Geller, Shawn Drayton,Theo Gray, Kelly Green, Kevin Hayden,Marnie Hill, Evan Hubbard, GregMillett, and Josselyn Neukom. Call her at (972) 280-2297 or .
Finally, Anna Cathcart Harvey has achieved one of the most singular feats of our class. As I write this, Anna and Pete are the proud parents of, count 'em, triplets William, Robert, and Mosby! Amazingly, Anna says that she hopes to bring the babies to Reunion. Now that is a reason for us to forget our self-pitying excuses and trek to Hanover!
In the meantime, I will be doing secretary double-duty, and giving Anna a much-needed break. Until Reunion, when we elect new officers, send your correspondence to me:
