As I write these notes (in February) the Dartmouth world is still rattling with the aftershocks of the Trustees' decisions to make significant changes to the residential and social system (read "the Greek system") at Dartmouth. I'm sure there will be much discussion elsewhere in this magazine, in this and coming months. To the extent you wish, please use the Dartmouth homepage, our class newsletter, this column, and any other means to participate in the conversation to which President Wright has called us. Elsewhere across the class: Hank Paulson is again in the news, removing the Co - from his position as Co-CEO at Goldman Sachs. His former colleague had leaned toward growth in the trading and the financial markets; Hank is "more attuned to the banking side of the business" (Wall Street Journal). Clearly, the leadership at Goldman Sachs values Hank's approach to the future, and it is now his ship to run. John Meehan was recently elected to the board of directors of the United Way of the Capital Area (Hartford, Conn.). This hat joins the others in the community service closet, including the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce, Urban League, and Hartford Action Plan. His day job is president and CEO of Hartford Hospital. Early decision results are in, and congratulations due to: Karen (daughter of Larry Burnet), Matthew (son of RobertBurr), and Katherine (daughter of MichelZalesky). More to come once the regular decisions are in hand. Paul Fitzgerald recently wrote to the Tri-Kap newsletter: "If anyone knows the way to San Francisco, I'd like to see you. My son opted not be a Greener (sigh) and is attending Stanford. My daughter is a high school sophomore and plays piano. My wife (Kathy) is an RN and plays a mean game of tennis and ping pong with me. Now that my knee surgery is healed, I've been skiing more. I've been busy writing a medical book chapter on endocrinology, my specialty. Anybody need testosterone?" (Note: the class secretary passes; thanks anyway). Dick Jones is a senior programmer at McCormick and Co. in Maryland, leading the Y2K effort there. Wife Martha has been working in aircraft insurance for over 20 years. Together they have been singing in a local chamber chorus, that recently traveled to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Amman, Jordan. Daughter Kristin is a graphics designer for a software company that produces monitoring software for area-wide networks. Son Matthew is a senior in high school, excellent in math and science, and is active in wrestling, golf, and paint ball and has a second-degree black belt in karate.
Some news from the Hull brothers: JonHull is in private law practice in Damariscotta, Maine. He has three children, Margaret, Catherine, and Peter, ages 16,14 and 10. Wife Gretchen is a middle-school teacher and currently writing a book. They have recently bought 150 acres in Cape Breton with exquisite panoramic views. David Hull, who has been helping the class set up a web page, is in Los Angeles, a dean for technology and teaching computer sciences and programming in the UC system. Wife Sandy has a Ph.D. in psychiatric social work. In his pre-California life, David spent time in London and in Africa with Dr. Leakey, and was reportedly an expert in leaf-eating monkeys. This eased the transition to California, I'm sure...and to the end of this month's column. 157 Sandwich Road, Plymouth, MA 02360-2503; (508) 746-5894;
