1928
Jerry Buford Sass died December 23, 1998, of a heart attack. Jerry prepared for Dartmoudi at the Kemper Military School. At Dartmouth he majored in history, joined Beta Theta Pi and Casque & Gauntlet, and played tennis as captain of the freshman team and, during his senior year, as captain of the varsity team. After graduation he joined the Sultan Oil & Drilling Co. and became director and CEO of that and a half dozen other companies. He qualified for a private pilot license in 1934 and was a major in the U.S. Army Air Force 1942-1946. He later became a licensed real estate broker and insurance agent. His third wife, Rachel Erickson, and six children survive him. He stated in a letter, "Over a span of 18 years I flew as a pilot just over 15,000 hours at the controls."
1934
Thomas M. Beers died on January 2, 1999, at the Willowfield Nursing Home as a result of complications from a broken hip. He attended the Evanston Township High School and at Dartmouth was a history major, member of Green Key and Phi Sigma Psi, manager of varsity basketball and editor of the Green Book. Her served the College by interviewing prospective students and serving as class agent and on the class reunion giving committee, and executive committee. He served as vice president of sales with publisher R. R. Donnelly and Sons, until 1959, when he became vice president of the National Geographic Society until his retirement in 1976. He is survived by wife Mary, daughters Susan and Nancy, sons Thomas Jr. and Richard, and six grandchildren.
1943
Thomas Temple Keeler died December 8,1998, in Houston, Texas. Tom grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where he attended the University School prior to entering Dartmouth. Tom left college in 1941 for the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served in the Third Air Force as an airplane mechanics specialist. Following service, he entered the family business, Temple Lumber Co. of Denton, Texas. Tom later turned to commercial real estate operations and remained in the Corpus Christi area. He is a past director of Lumbermen's Association of Texas, of the Bayftont Advisory Board of Corpus Christi, and the Corpus Christi Yacht Club. Tom was a supporter of area philanthropic organizations. He is survived by wife Cora, son Tennison, brother Robert '36, and sister Virginia.
1944
Joseph Leonard Drummey a retired employee of the Massachusetts auditing department, died in a Plymouth, Mass., nursing home November 3,1998. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease for the past several years. Joe came to Dartmouth from Watertown, Mass. He majored in sociology and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He graduated after WWII and four years as a master sargeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Joe was a salesman most of his life: shoes, cartons, glass, and subsequently was a sales manager for both Labatt Importers and Anheuser Busch. He is survived by his wife, Marie, two daughters, and brother Paul '50.
1945
George Fisher Barr reporter, editor, publisher, musical director, class of'45 communicator par excellence, died December 26,1998, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a long illness. Following the outbreak of WWII, George volunteered for duty with the 10th Mountain Division, later joining the OSS. Returning to Dartmouth in 1946, George became president of Green Key, the first president of the Undergraduate Council, manager of radio station WDCR, president of Casque & Gauntlet and a member of Palaeopitus. Graduation brought a series of managerial positions in the publishing communications fields. George became class newsletter editor in 1979, and received the Class Newsletter Editors Honorable Mention Award. Survivors include wife Betsy, son Robert '73, daughter Janet, and five grandchildren.
1952
George J.T. Sadler who died in October 1998, was a life-long son of New Hampshire. Before Dartmouth he attended Exeter and after finishing college with a degree in geography, he joined his father in the Sadler Insurance Agency in Nashua, which he operated until his retirement in the nineties. At our 25th Reunion two of George's three children were already working part-time in the insurance agency and, presumably, George, Lucinda, and Timothy now continue the family tradition. George loved his life with his wife, Sally, lived on 11 acres in Hollis, and raised horses and dogs. He was an avid football fan and frequently drove up to Hanover for the games.
1953
Alfred B. Hathcock died at home in Fort Smith, Ark., on October 1,1998, after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Prior to coming to Dartmouth, he attended Western Military Academy in Alton, Ill. After graduation from Dartmouth, A1 attended Dartmouth Medical School and graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years before beginning residency trainpedic and hand surgery at the Holt-Krock Clinic, the fifth generation of this family to practice medicine in Arkansas. At Dartmouth Al was a member of Phi Delta Theta, the Glee Club, and the DOC. A1 is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara, son Stephen '82, a daughter, four grandchildren, and a brother.
1960
David S. Hull died on December 5, 1998, in New York City of liver cancer. He was a literary agent for more than 30 years. Prior to establishing Hull House Literary Agency in New York, he served as East Coast story editor for Universal Pictures, editor at Coward, McCann Inc., and vice president of James Brown Associates. Earlier he had been London editor for Film Quarterly and a motion picture journalist in Europe. He was the author of two books, Film in the Third. Reich mA James Henry Cafferty. He is survived by long-time companion Frank Stetz. Hull took only one English class at Dartmouth, but in his career came to handle about 50 writers.
