The worldwide search for a class newsletter editor announced in May has come to a successful conclusion. After vetting hundreds of resumes, interviewing dozens of eager Ben Bradlee wannabes, and turning over several rocks, we are ready to announce the results. And the winner is...Bob Leach. A quick snapshot of the life of the man who will inspire us during die three years leading up to our 2 sth Reunion: Bob lives in Wellesley, Mass., with his wife, Kate, and their two children. He is an actuary at the U.S. headquarters office of Sun Life of Canada in annuity and pension products. Bob has served as a class agent, an occasional admissions interviewer, a soccer/basketball/baseball coach, and a "Big Brother" for several years. The Leaches spend a good deal of free time in the Upper Valley, keeping up with friends there as well as events around the Dartmouth campus. Kate lived in the Hanover area for about ten years, so they know lots of people there. Good sources for the newsletter.
Meanwhile, retiring newsletter editor Dave Haraway is having no trouble readjusting to life in the Rockies. Dave has left the Hanover plain and the Dartmouth development office for Colorado Springs and directing planned giving at Colorado College. The rigors of adjusting to his new job included white water rafting, where Dave tried to bond with his new colleagues rather than with the large boulders in the Arkansas River. He also finds that at 6,200 feet above sea level, he can drive a golf ball like John Daly. There are two spare bedrooms at the Haraway home, so Dave invites folks to stop by when they are in town.
This spring Robert Hahn checked in from Stockholm. "It is possible that some Dartmouth '77s remember me, although I only stayed in Hanover for one academic year (1973-1974). I was a guest student from Sweden and I still live here, in a suburb of Stockholm. I am married and have three daughters, 11, 10, and 4 years of age. I became an anesthesiologist and served as a clinician for IS years along with an increasing load of research group work. Five years ago I obtained a professorship at the Karolinska Institute, a medical school and research facility, with a special responsibility for Ph.D. programs in anesthesiology." Robert is one of two professors of anesthesiology at the institute, where he and his colleagues enjoy the honor of annually selecting the winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
Earlier this year the U.S. Navy announced that Commander Chip Swicker had been selected to command his own ship. At the time of the announcement Chip was serving at the Pentagon in the ballistic missile defense organization. After graduation Chip spent five years at sea in large oceangoing sailing vessels, including the clipper schooner Pride of Baltimore. He received his commission in 1982, and earned master's degrees in scientific and technical intelligence in 1990 and at the Naval War College in 1995, receiving several honors for his research projects. Chip has served on Kiddclass guided missile destroyers and nuclear and Aegis-class cruisers, completing his executive officer tour in 1997. Chip and his wife, Gayle, live in Vienna, Va.
By the way, in the renegade May class newsletter, was that Amy Cholnoky and Ann Duffy who promised the Rolling Stones concert for the 25th Reunion? Well, start me up!
