Today in the mail: a press release from the Museum of Chinese in the Americas announcing a photography exhibit, "On the Path of Reconciliation: Photographs by Joshua Chuang, Images of New York Chinatown." The exhibition photographs symbolize Chuang's personal exploration "of what it means to be Chinese in America—the struggle to balance oneself between two worlds and find a sense of self." Josh chose New York Chinatown as his subject "to make peace with the place that had been pivotal in shaping my own perception of who I was." The exhibit was to run until January 8, 2000, at MoCA, located at 70 Mulberry St. in New York City.
Aimee Whitenack and Jen Karlen both wrote in about their mini-reunion in Minneapolis with Becca Davenport, DuneThorne, Taylor Craig and LisaZeytoonjian. According to Aimee, the weekend included everything from "drag shows to polka dancing" and they picked up a great Midwestern game called "hammer schlagen" which they claim would be quite a diversion from pong. Jen is currently teaching fifth grade in San Francisco. Experience, a magazine started by
Dartmouth grad Jennifer Floren '93, recently arrived in my mailbox. I opened it to find a short bio and cute picture of Aimee on the "Contributors" page. She wrote a feature for die magazine on Microstrategy, a company here in Vienna, Va., that employs many Dartmouth grads, including my roommates. Spencer Doyle's hijinks spearheading a rendition of "The Full Monty" for the company cruise talent show were detailed. As he noted, "At any other company, I would have been fired [for doing a strip act]. At Microstrat-egy, we took grand prize." Aimee wrote that, in addition to her gig with experience, she is working on a book. Before joining the magazine, she waited tables for several months at the Salty Dog Restaurant ["Ya think I was trying to hold onto Dartmouth a bit?"]. In her spare time she is turning the extensive research she has done on European gardens into a children's book.
In the "Starting Out" section of experience, Lisa Zeytoonjian is profiled in her job as a law and public policy research assistant at Abt Associates. The policy and research company is starting Lisa on the long road to her goal of "opening an innovative rehabilitation center for juvenile delinquents." In a later article Kate Nugent was quoted in a piece on the generation gap at work. Now at Saatchi & Saatchi as an assistant media planner, Nugent had some words of wisdom to share with the writer about working with ones' peers versus bridging the gap between workers in their 20s and in their 40s.
Clarice Cloutier e-mailed me to say she was awarded a full fellowship at Princeton University to pursue a Ph.D. in Slavic languages and literatures. In her second year, Clarice has presented at several conferences, researched in Russia and was awarded a Princeton Council on Regional Studies grant for language studies in Prague.
