As promised, here are a few ways our fellow '89s celebrated the end of 1999. RandiEngle camped tinder the stars at Bodega Bay in California with husband Tom Ruhn '88 and their 3-year-old daughter Becca. She wrote, "After roasting Marshmallows and reading from Harry Potter, we fell asleep, only to be awakened at midnight by cheering from the campsites around us and some small, surprisingly nearby, fireworks." Ellie Mahoney Loughlin and Phil Loughlin spent the week skiing at Whisder/Blackcomb in British Columbia. They rented a house with Bob Jaffe and Bill Dean and hit the slopes with Jan Brzeski and wife Nicole.

Andrew Erlichson ran around Central Park at midnight in a "5k fun run with 6,000 other crazy New Yorkers." Josh Adler says he "ran like mad to get the heck out of Manhattan," where his midtown apartment was a little too close to the festivities. He sampled champagnes with friends across the river in New Jersey.

Andrew Pulrang writes that he spent the day "watching each time zone enter the year 2000 on CNN. No parties," he says, "but it was surprisingly exciting and enjoyable."

Cruising aboard a 65-foot boat in the Hong Kong harbor were Julie McColl McKenna, Dave McKenna Russell Wolff and wife Patty, Jessy Berg and husband D. Valentine '86 and Gesine Albrecht. They witnessed the harbor's amazing lights, heard the countdown and danced the night away. Russell joined the Dartmouth bash from his home base in Singapore and says he also received phone calls from Eric Potoker and Milce Herzig as the clock struck midnight.

Jay Lott "took delivery of my Christmas present to myself, a 7-week-old black Labrador puppy named Diana."

Victor Smith marked the century's turn by praying and celebrating with wife Dawn Generals-Smith '90, their two children and other family members.

Michele Dogin Hernandez writes from Florida that she fell asleep before midnight and welcomed the New Year when fireworks woke her 2-year-old daughter Alexia.

Many of our classmates celebrated in Vermont, like Paul Cachion and wife Sylvie Mortimer, who stayed with friends, went snowshoeing on a nearby mountain and enjoyed the tranquility of the surrounding state forest.

David Puerto and wife Lori Waddell attended a blowout family party in Vermont with 100 guests, a rocking blues band and some "awesome fireworks."

Rebecca Reese and her husband were instructed to arrive at her parents' house in Vermont "dressed as our favorite decade of the 1900s." She writes, "In addition to feasting on champagne, caviar and other tasty treats, many of us ended up in skates on the frozen pond for a pre-midnight, starlit hockey game."

Tom Avril and wife Karen ate their way through the midnight hour at a ninecourse dinner prepared by a friend who is a chef and restaurant critic. They'd expected to spend the night at home with daughter Eleanor and were thrilled to get the invitation with the words "babies welcome!"

David Spindler spent three days on the Appalachian Trail going west from Hanover to Woodstock.

Ken Horton "watched interesting places I used to live (before becoming a parent) celebrate on TV and then wandered 15-feet from the house to bring in more wood for the fire."

David Gazzaniga reports that he spent a sober New Year's Eve operating on a patient who was involved in a motor vehicle accident. He writes, "I did the last case of the millennium at Massachusetts General Hospital."

Marc Faraye an emergency medicine resident in Jacksonville, Fla., managed to avoid the ER on the big night and vacationed in Lake Tahoe with wife Donna and their 2-year-old son Daniel. He says, "The new millennium brings high expectations of yet another son in April, and maybe Jay Fiedler '94 leading the hometown Jaguars to a Super Bowl victory!"

Next month: the baby file and lots more New Year's news.
