First, although this is old news, I want to congratulate Susan Dentzer both on her election as the chairman of the board of trustees and for her detailed and insightful analysis of the anthrax threat on PBS, MSNBC and other forums this past autumn. After leading the effort to get the student life initiative back on track after its rocky roll out, Susan can handle anything.
I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Dartmouth had a pretty smooth year in 2001 with Susan, Missy Attridge and Amy Cholnoky in charge. This must be what President Kemeny had in mind 30 years ago.
Speaking of College administrative matters, when you receive your ballot for the upcoming trustee election, one of the candidates will be our own Jose Fernandez. Jose heads the Latin America practice group of the national law firm O'Melveny & Myers and devotes a substantial portion of his time to advising bidders and governments on privatization transactions involving stateowned enterprises in Latin America, Africa and other parts of the developing world. Jose is also a director of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, the Spain-U.S.A. Chamber of Commerce, Ballet Hispanico of New York and Ceiba Productions, a producer of WBGO-FM, Newark Public Radio. I'll let Bob Leach interview the candidate on more weighty issues in the class newsletter and limit myself to a shameless plug for Jose's election.
Steve Solomon sent me the following note for the holidays. "I hope this finds you and the' family well. Esther, Lewie and I are all doing great. We took Lewie to the Magic Kingdom (not the same one you and I visited a couple times freshman year), which was a blast. We're going down to Manzanillo, Mexico, for New Year's for a week with the rest of my family. We're staying at the resort wherejo was filmed. I think Esther is going to keep a close eye on me and be listening for 'Bolero.' Lewis brings me joy every day. Of course, I haven't had to start paying his Dartmouth tuition yet. Esther's doing great, in spite of having to take (such good!) care of us two wild Solomon boys. She just can't understand why a psychologist specializing in couples therapy isn't the perfect husband. I tell her it's because of my Dartmouth fraternity experiences."
On the theme of favorite places at Dartmouth, Barry Harwick has the good fortune to continue to regularly visit his favorite place on campus. "My favorite place on campus is the section of trail along the Connecticut River called Pine Park. I have literally run all over the country and I have not found a prettier or more enjoyable spot. A surprising number of people make it down there, usually by coming down the road off the golf course that brings you down Freshman Hill. The area is shared by runners, joggers, walkers and nature lovers. My team at Dartmouth runs there regularly, and so do I. Having a spot like that so close to campus is wonderful; easy access, while at the same time giving people a sense that they are far away from everything else."
Finally, enough talk about our 25th reunion this June. The time has come to act. Schedule the time off, make the plane reservation and decide whether you'll rough it in a dorm or treat yourself to a fancy room at an Upper Valley pleasure dome. The rooms with the hot tubs are still available.
