As has been the case in the past two years in this the opening issue of the MAGAZINE it is our most pleasant privilege to record the events of the annual '23 summer reunion and our most unpleasant duty to remind you who passed us up that you missed a really grand week-end—one that was enthusiastically labelled a "best yet." '23's began to appear on the Dartmouth'sIn Town Again board at the Inn late Friday afternoon and continued throughout the evening and Saturday forenoon. By the time we sat down for our meeting it listed Cy and Harriet Aschenbach, Dean Baker, Sherm and Ellie Baldwin, Chick and Peg Bundy, Ted and Olive Caswell, Irish and Alice Flanigan, Nat Harmon, George Horan, Jim Landauer, Johnny Moore, George and Julie Musk, Hen Perkins, George and Jo Weston, and Bob Whitting- hill.

The forenoon being slightly overcast Ford and Peggy Sayre, the Inn managers, turned over to us the summer reading room (the ski room in season) for our meeting. The first item of business was to extend to Johnny Moore and Irish Flanigan a sincere and unanimous vote of thanks for the major contribution each had made to this year's Alumni Fund campaign—Johnny in so ably taking over the duties of head agent of the New York network when Babe Miner was unexpectedly called to service in the Naval Medical Corps and Irish for his wonderful series of Newsletters or Green Sheets as he calls them—both outstanding pieces of work as you all know and justly deserving of the recognition and praise they received from the class and the College. An appeal was issued to unearth a member of the class whose hobby is movie-taking who would gather together the films taken at our various reunions, have copies made of the best shots and work the parts into a reel or two that we could have for showing at class dinners, home gatherings, etc., many more of which were urged and we understand are in the immediate offing. We have some money set aside in our Treasury to take care of the expense of these movies and it would make a marvelous addition to our records besides affording all of us a lot of fun. I would love to hear from anyone who wants to volunteer to tackle the job or who has any suggestions—and the sooner the quicker.

Due to increased pressure of business Ward Hilton has had to retire from his position as head agent of the Chicago network. His resignation was accepted regretfully as Ward has put in a good many years of untiring effort in this work and his record of accomplishment is one that makes the class permanently indebted to him. His successor was selected and as soon as this draft catches up with him and he has a chance to organize his group we will give you the details.

Jim Landauer reported for the 25th Reunion Gift Committee appointed last summer and composed of Bob McMillan, Jim and Pem Whitcomb. They had met among themselves and also with the chairman of the Alumni Council's Committee on Special Gifts to the College. Jim led a discussion of procedures and objectives for us to consider in adopting a plan to start accumulating our gift right away, so that it may be spread out over the seven years still to go before our 25th. The Committee will meet again shortly to iron out some of the details and will announce the final plans in the Fall.

And so ended two hours of business with a new high for accomplishment and understanding and started a week-end of fun with another new high for conviviality and congeniality.

Athletically, golf was the afternoon's favorite although Jim Landauer helped maintain '23's reputation for all around athletic ability by pacing by far the fastest doubles game on the varsity courts. The Westons and the Musks played a mixed foursome with the men paired against the girls, the result of which reliable sources informed me was a victory for the girls with Jo Weston who is Springfield's women's champ the low scorer. Dean Baker and George Horan had a hot match, both verging on the 70's while Johnny Moore and Nat Harmon had a hot match. The rest of us frittered away the afternoon with a delightful program of "visitin" although Ted Caswell, Irish Flanigan, and I put in a few serious moments when Ted sounded us out on some of the plans he is working up for our 20th reunion which he is general chairmaning—and they sound like the stuff, too!

The evening might well be labelled "From Wash-out to Knock-out in 30 Minutes." We had a cook-out planned but just as we were about to leave the Inn one of Hanover's most ferocious thunder storms struck—Wash-out!! Thirty minutes later the never non-plussed Sayres had the answer and with the cooperation of the kitchen range we were picnicing on the awninged Inn terrace—Knock-out!!

Sunday was one of those days you don't like to think about as it marked the end of such a grand week-end. A few of the hardier played some more golf but for most of us it was that painful process of packing up and saying "Good-bye," the less thought of the better.

Appropriately enough on display in our Inn meeting room was one of Pudge Neidlinger's latest, a beautiful water color of Baker Tower against a winter sunset. Pudge is certainly doing some fine things and we understand has sold several at what to a novice sound like very satisfactory prices. We were all sorry to miss seeing Pudge but he was away on a much-deserved vacation after literally spending the summer in his office trying to settle the draft status of the undergraduates Not a flat tire in the crowd excepting the one on the rear wheel of the bicycle Cy Ashenbach pedalled out of the golf course but of necessity pushed home Irish and I were all for joining Cy on his jaunt but from our chairs on the porch we could not seem to find a route that was not all up hill so we passed it up in favor of the extremely interesting exhibit of the N. H. Craftsmen's Guild being held in the gym. ... .Ruth Landauer was not able to join us due to unexpected guests blowing into their Pineo Hill lodge. We were disappointed, of course, but anytime Ruth has to miss any of our gatherings if she will let either Bevy or Babs, her two oldest daughters pinch hit for her it will go a long way toward easing our disappointment Had a candid camera man been on duty one of his better shots would have been of bachelor George Horan at the picnic surrounded by the wives contingent quizzing each one as to how that young and attractive group could ever have married such a middle-aged and decrepit appearing bunch of men Another good one would have been at 4:53 Saturday P.M. —of Irish and Cy absorbing the Inn's best iced tea with a gusto reminiscent of better days Dean Baker and Hen Perkins had to leave before the picnic, Dean to put in Sunday supervising the renovation work at his Londonderry, Vt., farm and Hen to lead a group of hardy mountaineers up Mt. Cardigan while Nat Harmon pulled out right after the picnic to join his Mrs. in upper Vt. State for the balance of his vacation Ted Caswell and George Musk made up for my usual lack of eloquence in eulogizing Irish's work with his green sheet series by presenting him with a gorgeous bouquet of vegetables at a touching ceremony during the pre-picnic festivities For a good sound shot we recommend George Horan's song "Mr. Weaver"—or do we? Perhaps we had better refer that request to Johnny Moore As usual Chick and Peg Bundy accepted the role of roving reporters and this year Bob Whittinghill, his sister and friend were added to the staff-. But I guess they didn't rove much because the only report that came to this corner was that they were all having a swell time.

The rest of the summer news will have to keep until the next issue. But just one more thing! Under the management of Doc Morgan there will be a class buffet lunch at the Hotel Commander in Harvard Square the noon of the Harvard Game. Already Doc has received most enthusiastic responses to the inquiries he has made among the men and wives in and around Boston and looks for a big group to be on hand. And doesn't it sound like a grand idea? A fine lunch is guaranteed, no parking problem as you can leave your car at the Hotel and walk to the Game, and Doc promises the expenses to be very moderate. Put it down on your calendar now.
