This Class Notes is definitely one of the more global ones that I've had in a while. First, an update on Owen Gottliebs movie. He says the story is based on the real-life exploits of an "eclectic" candidate for the CIA who, since the age of 12, has devoted her life to becoming a superhero. Unfortunately, the heroine was re jected from the CIA, despite her qualifications, and now works for international investigative firms. Owen and his partner first learned of this woman in a profile on National Public Radio. More news about West Coast '95s comes from Peter Cobb '98, dishing dirt on his big sister, Kristin Cobb. Kristen received her Ph.D. in epidemiology from Stanford University this past October 2001. Her project involved the study of bone density in women runners. Considering her running career at Dartmouth, that Kristin would study this issue is not such a surprise. Kristin's work is described more fully at www.stanford.edu/~kcobb/bfit/. Kristin is doing one final academic year at a scientific writing program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I also received news about Emily Abernathy-Jones and Dave Jones who are both happily living outside of San Francisco, California. Dave is working at Goldman Sachs and Emily is working for a wedding dress designer in San Francisco.
Gretchen Freeman Cappio wrote from Seattle, Washington, to say that she and husband, Adam Cappio '96, are new parents to Beatrice, born on October 15,2001. If Beatrice were to attend Dartmouth, she would become the fifth Dartmouth Cappio, including great grandfather Jildo '32 and grandfather Jim '63. Aunt Nora is also a 97 grad. Gretchen and Adam see a lot of the Seattle Dartmouth crowd including Joe Dadzie, Wyatt Oswald '94, Heather Eliassen, Lara Burgel '96, Chris Fowler '97, Hans Kieserman '97 and Jamie Shandro '98. Gretchen is enjoying her work as a litigation attorney and Adam works for the Internet software"company Real Networks.
Some additional news from Phyllis (Steinberg) Fagell in Washington, D.C. She says that she and her husband, Steve Fagell, are enjoying their new baby, Benjamin, acknowledging that having a child "is definitely a huge life change but a great one." Phyllis has been working as an editor at the Advisory Board Co. and is considering a switch to freelance writing and editing so that she can spend more time with Benjamin. Steve just finished a clerkship with a federal judge and is now working at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.
Finally, some international news. Jacob Hooker has been living in Wanxian, a small city on the Yangtze River in central China, for about a year as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Jake is one of five foreigners in a city of around 500,000. Although Jake's immediate duty is to teach English, he is able to spend most of his time out of the classroom, learning Chinese, going for long walks in the countryside, exploring the old alleys down by the river and admiring the long, rusted coal freighters anchored in the middle current." Jake will finish up with the Peace Corps in June 2002, after which he may spend a few months traveling in Xinjiang, a largely Muslim province in northwestern China, and Tibet. Following his travels he may look for work in Beijing. Longlost friends can reach him at jacobhooker@ hotmail.com.
This is it for my somewhat global Class Notes for now. As always, I'm looking for news from you.
