More than 440 issues of the DAM carrying our class of 1953 Notes columns have been published since our class entered the alumni ranks. They have spread the word of our class' ongoing activities and our accomplishments, both personal and collectively, for all to see. As we enter our 50-plus-one-year as alumni, our story continues to unfold.
Our 50th reunion is now a pleasant memory. We have moved on. Our new class officers are: Phil Beekman, president; Bob Callendar, VP for class affairs; Dick Fleming, VP for finances and treasurer; Dave Donovan and Harlan Fair, co-chairmen for mini-reunions; John Kennedy, associate secretary; David Siegal, life crisis officer; Ron Lazar, bequest chairman; Dave Halloran, Webmaster; and Chuck Reilly, head agent.
The mini-reunion schedule for the fall is complete. Chuck and Donna Reilly will host the first at their new home after the Colgate game. Nancy and Bill Johnson continue their longest running hit party after the Penn game. The Beekman extravaganza, hosted by Phil, follows the Columbia game, with a gala affair at Ann and Harlan Fairs after the Cornell game. We complete the season with a lovely event at Ann and Brock Brower's after the Princeton game. Our annual class meeting will take place on Saturday morning, of the Columbia game, October 25, at 9:30 a.m. at Phil Beekman's home.
Our classmates continue to be on the move, and not only to Hanover. Loretta and John Wortley enjoy traveling, more specifically, sailing the high seas. So Dr. John has figured out a way to continue his family practice of medicine while catering to their love of travel. For the past two years he has spent his off time as a ship's doctor. He sails on the large cruise ships with as many as 1,500 passengers and a crew of 600, supervising a staff of three or four nurses. The medical facilities are extensive providing an ICU, a six-bed infirmary, simple X-rays, cardiac defibrillators, monitors, automated labs for testing in addition to a well-stocked pharmacy. When he travels on smaller cruise ships with as few as 100 passengers, the passengers are usually younger and the need for such extensive medical facilities is less. Loretta and John enjoy exploring their ports of call with the other passengers where they have an opportunity to "climb mountains or enjoy beach parties or whatever." And speaking of sailing, Bill Gilges in an e-mail to John Van Hyke tells of his sailing through the Panama Canal in a small boat, also taking his boys up to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in June and presently preparing to fly to Spain to sail the coast of Portugal to Gibraltar.
I must sadly report the deaths of Ward Hamm and Kent C. Robinson. On behalf of our classmates I offer our sincere condolences to Ward's sister, Mrs. Julie H. McDowell, and to Kent's widow, Beth.
I would be delighted to hear from you, and especially anyone who has some news for these Notes. Cheers!
