My comments in the last issue about the joys of visiting China have lost a lot of their zing. Imagine that just a few months ago we hadn't even heard of SARS. Now we're trying to extract the same children we enjoyed visiting so they can wait out the epidemic in a safer environment.

I'm sorry to have to announce that another classmate died last August. James "Jim" Monroe Marx died on August 3,2002. The last news I had of Jim and his wife, Helen, was when they were both made members of the Rockefeller University Council in 1985. I'll get an update for the obituary that will appear in a future issue. In the March-April issue I mentioned that only two years had as many as four deaths (1976 and 1997); now we have another equally bad year. After Irving Tullar's death in June, there were three in August alone (Fred Meils, Fred Spitz and Jim). Ifyou knew Jim, please send me reminiscences for our "In Memoriam" Web page.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has featured the Gala Rhododendron Nursery, a highly successful nursery run by Floyd Moore Jr., who moved from venture capital to the nursery business in 1991. Fred actually sells more conifers than rhodies in his Valencia nursery, despite his establishments name and the presence of more than 70 varieties of the flowering plant. If you live in the Pittsburgh area, the article recommends that you check out Floyd's establishment and get his expert advice on raising plants of all kinds.

Bob Cahners came in first in the 2002 World Masters Games in Melbourne, Australia, in the hammer-throwing event. Bob also won the 20-pound weight throw at the ASATF New England Championships held at Brown university in Providence, Rhode Island.

Holland & Knight (Clearwater,Florida) attorney Fred Rothenberg has been selected for inclusion in the 2003-2004 edition of The BestLawyers in America for his contributions in the area of employee benefits law. He's been on the list for the past 20 years, so this isn't exactly hot news, but this is the first time I've been informed and 20 years is an impressive record. William "Bill" E. Fisher has also been named to the legal referral guide; Bill works for the Detroit office of Dykema-Grossett.

In April Fred Kolo directed his own performing version of Oscar Wildes Salome at The Here, an off-Broadway theater. Books of poetry, guitar recitals, play writing and directing; can Fred still be doing set designs for television detective programs?

Finally, I've received an announcement that Edward "Ed" P. Jaeger has stepped down as the president and CEO of Engle-Hambright & Davies, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, insurance company. Ed will continue as corporate secretary. Ed has been at EHD in various positions for more than 30 years. After Dartmouth he got a masters degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
