Due to the war in Iraq, the Arts and Sciences Graduate Alumni Association at Dartmouth (ASGAAD) canceled its annual phonathon, which was scheduled for March. However, we still need and appreciate your contributions. The money raised goes mainly to Rind research grants for current graduate students .You will find information on where to send your contribution in the current dean's letter. Please help us continue this worthwhile program while reducing the number of annoying calls in your life.

Len Wisniewski (computer science' 96), ASGAAD board president, is planning another weekend at Mt. Moosilauke this summer. If you are interested in reassuring yourself that New Hampshire really does have a summer and would like to participate, please contact Len at lenbo@ alum.danmouth.org.

An important date for all Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) alumni is Wednesday, July 9. The MALS Alumni Council will hold its summer lunch and meeting at noon in the Hayward Lounge at the Hanover Inn. All MALS alumni, as well as current graduate students, are invited to attend. This is an opportunity to chat with friends, meet MALS students and offer suggestions to the Alumni Council. To reserve a place, call the MALS office at (603) 646-3592.

In a ceremony at the White House this March, R. David Bynum (biology'82) was given a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics, Science and Engineering Mentoring. He was one of 10 individuals and six institutions to receive the honor. He is a professor of biochemistry and cell biology at Stony Brook University (State University of New York), and directly mentored 38 undergraduate students as well as helped guide more than 200 community college students and 120 high school students to the study of molecular biology.

Terrilyn Olson (earth sciences'83) was recently cited in The American Oil and Gas Reporter for her 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. She is currently a petrophysical associate at Tom Brown Inc. in Denver. Before joining Tom Brown in November 2000 she worked for Amoco Production Co. and BPAmoco in California, the Rockies, the Mid-Continent and the North Sea.

Novelist Heidi Julavits (comparative literature'90), along with Village Voice senior editor Ed Park and author Vendela Vida, has launched a new magazine. Titled The Believer, it is an ad-free literary journal. The magazine is already on the newsstands and was mentioned in the April 14 edition of Newsweek.
