The annual June reunion season gave new meaning to "seeing the Green" when several record-setting donations were made. The class of 1978 gave the College $14,8 million, the largest class donation ever made in a single year; the class of 1968 topped the record for a 35th reunion donation fay raising $10.4 million; and the class of 1953 established a 50th-reunion record by raising $12.5 million. The class of 1953 also set a 50th-reunion attendance record, with 280 classmates returning to Hanover.
The men's hockey team this year will feature three players selected in the National Hockey League's June draft. Most notable was the first-round selection of forward Hugh Jessiman '06 by his hometown New York Rangers. Forward Lee Stempniak '05 went to the St. Louis Blues in the fifth round and Tanner Glass '07 was chosen in the ninth round by the Florida Panthers. The Big Green season starts November I.
Do Dartmouth students rank when it comes to making a fashion statement? Apparently not, according to Women'sWear Daily. When the fashion bible recently listed America's most fashionable colleges, Dartmouth was not mentioned. But three Ivy League schools merited attention: Penn (No. 4), Yale (No.9) and Cornell (honorable mention).
Outdoor Programs has a new director. Jeff Brown, formerly the director of educational operations for the Yellowstone Association at Yellowstone National Park, started his new job on August 4. "I'm pleased to be joining an outdoor program that has been an important part of the Dartmouth experience for almost 100 years and serves as a model for similar programs across the country," he says. Brown is married to Wendy Zug '89.
Stop by the Hood Museum of Art this fall and you'll find child's play—ancientGreek child's play that is. "Coming of Age in Ancient Greece," a new exhibition organized by the museum, provides an extensive look at childhood in the classical era, featuring painted vases, sculptures and grave monuments depicting children as well as ancient toys and baby bottles. The exhibition travels to New York City, Cincinnati and Los Angeles next year.
