At least 23 of our classmates made it to Homecoming Weekend in late October and were there to witness the Big Greens victory over Columbia. What looked like a sure victory became a nail-biter in the last two minutes, but win we did. Praise be! Counted either at the class meeting or at the game were Clem Malin, Buddy Schattman, Len Clark, Tom Rosenwald, Howard Sodokoff, Tex Fridlund, Leo McKenna, Dick Whitney Harold Gordon, Russ Cooper-Mead, Joel Ash, David Kerr, Jack Tamagni, Wally Pugh, Dean Hofe, Elliott Weinstein, Fritz Simms, Jon Strong, Glen French, Stew Wood, Bob Slater, Dave Stackpole and Harry Nutting. We had the usual horse-drawn rig for the parade Friday night that made those classes following us watch their steps carefully. Saturday nights dinner at the Inn was highlighted by our class's two scholarship recipients, David Peranteau '04 and Rachel Halsema '06. They shared their experiences at Dartmouth and got a great round of applause from an appreciative class. These two give us reason to be proud of our scholarship fund's work. The market value of our $100,000 investment now approaches $290,000 and generated close to $18,OOO this past year. And 2,469 students now receive some form of financial assistance from more than 1,100 endowed scholarships. That signals a real commitment to the future.
Leon E. Induni, who has recently retired as Easton, Connecticut's town treasurer, was honored in mid-September by the Republican town committee for his 26 years of continuous service. He's also been a trustee and treasurer of the Staples Free School fund, an organization granting Easton students in need since 1977. After a 30-year career with GE, Leon became the tax assessor for the town of Trumbull. I hope he has an unlisted phone!
In keeping with a design that enables classmates to get together regularly, Glen French detailed the mini-reunions planned for 2004.This January or February there will be a New York City dinner and theater night for which Tom Rosenwald will be the class contact. Tony Bruscino and company have another Baci dinner planned for late March in Sarasota. Bob Slater and Doug Keare have arranged for a nifty getaway at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island in Michigan July 7-9. As an old Wolverine I can tell you that's a elegant place on a beautiful island! Jack Crowley, Tag Chapman and Ed Ross have designed a 70 th birthday of us all in Santa Fe, New Mexico, September 27-30, another spectacular setting. Homecoming will be October 29-31. And for those who want to really stretch your legs, there's a 15-day escorted tour to Croatia and Slovenia the last two weeks of May. There's something for everyone. Get on board!
Russ Cooper-Meade and Clem Malin are hard at workon our 50th reunion book, and each of us is asked to contribute. No one is to be left out.Our deceased classmates will be remembered and pictured with the rest of us, another sign of solidarity.
