There was an unusual reunion in Hanover in mid-October involving men from classes ranging from 1963 to 1967. Here's the story.

You may remember the cold and rainy fall of 1964. The Dartmouth soccer team, normally a valiant but middle-of-the-pack Ivy participant, put together a number of stunning upsets. The young squad, led by cool and witty Coach Whitey Burnham, nipped defending champ Brown, 1-0, and then surprised pre-season favorite Harvard, 3-2, on Chase Field. Aheart-stoppingcome-from behind 4-3 overtime win at Cornell clinched a tie for the Ivy League title, and the Greens first-ever NCAA Tournament bid.

More than a dozen members of that team gathered on the 40th anniversary of what was, to that time, Dartmouth's most successful soccer season. Class of'66ers anchored the defense back then, and came back to relive, in surprising detail, virtually every shot of that admirable campaign.

Peter Barber organized the weekend, which encompassed dinners, breakfasts and both men's and women's varsity soccer games with Penn, coming in from Oakland by way of Cape Cod with his effervescent wife, Mary. Peter recently retired after 35 years with the Social Security Administration. Fellow fullback Bill Duval drove down I-89 from Essex Junction, Vermont, where he and Barb have found time to raise five children while Bill was teaching middle school history and coaching soccer and basketball. He's been at it 39 years and counting. Your scribe, the lucky goalie who benefited from big and talented defenders, also attended, as did fullback Dick Jones, who lives in the Hanover area.

Sixty-fives sparked the teams offense, and Ronnie Knapp from Oregon and George Martin from Detroit returned to reminisce. Defender Hank Amon '67 also participated and '67s Chris Nevison and Brian McNerney were present. Two soccer standouts who played with the championship team were on hand as well, Dave Smoyer '63 and John Corpenters '64.

And, of course, Coach Burnham and his perennially lovely wife, Joanne, and team manager Bill Burton '65 joined the festivities. The group agreed to reconvene soon—for the 50th!
