Two Northern New England colleges have recognized classmates for their long and distinguished service
Champlain College has honored its retiring president, Roger Perry, with the creation of an endowed chair in his name. Roger has been at the career-oriented 1,700-student institution in Burlington, Vermont, for 23 years, serving as vice president for academic affairs and then provost for a decade before being named president in 1992.
According to the chairman of the Champlain board of trustees, Roger has, in his 13 years at the helm, "inspired faculty, staff and trustees to think in the future, and then act boldly to get us there. The word 'visionary' is tossed around too often these days; however, I think it is appropriate to use it here: Roger Perry truly defines visionary leadership."
Roger has led a major transformation, including the introduction of online education, overseas and graduate programs, new facilities and new academic programs that respond to the global marketplace. He is also on the board of the Vermont Technology Council.
Steven Kemper has been named Dana Professor of Anthropology at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Kemper, who earned his doctorate and master's at the University of Chicago, has been at Bates for 30 years. He is an authority on Asia, particularly Sri Lanka, and has written books on that nations past history and present-day economy.
Bob Hermann has been named president of the board of directors of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. The group provides free civil legal services to poor and low-income individuals and families in seven counties north of New York City. Bob, former solicitor general of New York State, is currently associated with the law firm of Thatcher Profitt and Wood LLP.
