It's always a good day when you come into your office and you get an e-mail that was written at 2:40 a.m. and begins, "MA- HONEYYYYYYYYYYYY." Such was the case recently and, of course, the person who sent the e-mail was Ed Hopkins. He wrote from San Diego following an alumni meeting where he badgered football coach Buddy Teevens about the fact that the football team went 2-8 last year while soccer made the NCAAs (gotta love that freshman soccer team pride we all carry!). He also said a slideshow about the new athletic facility was "amazing, a must see. I would rush right back to the Plain for a workout if the beach wasn't five blocks from my apartment." He is designing lab equipment used in cancer research these days, and says it all comes from the Shark Shield, an electromagnetic shark-repelling antenna made in Australia. After that he said, "Long story. Anyways, I'll check you later." So I guess that's that...for now.

Brian Ellner continues to make waves in Manhattan. He was recently appointed senior counselor for community affairs by the New York City Department of Education. In that position he will oversee the department s partnerships with community groups and build public support for DOE initiatives. Congratulations, Brian!

Another promotion for another classmate in N.Y.C.—Rob Birge was named managing director at TBWA/Chiat/Day, part of the TBWA World- wide family. According to the press release I got, "TBWA creates disruptive ideas for global clients, including Absolut, Adidas, Apple, Henkel, Masterfoods, McDonald's, Michelin, Nissan, Samsonite and Sony Playstation." That's quite a list! So congratulations also to Rob, who is becoming a major player with a company that is, well, a major player!

So we named a new mens crew coach here at Penn, Fred Honebein. And I'm sitting there reading his Oregon State bio, preparing his press release here, and at the end of it I read, "Fred and his wife, Anne Kakela..."at which point I stopped reading. I know that woman, and so do you, guys! So welcome, Anne and Fred, to Philadelphia! Since no one else sent me any news, I thought I would end with a musing—maybe I'll start making this a tradition. In any case, here goes: Anyone who thinks Family Guy and Entourage aren't two of the best shows on TV these days is missing the boat. And does anyone out there watch Footballers'Wives on BBC America? I feel dirty just watching it sometimes. But I still do.
