The Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named Robert Bell, professor of English at William College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, as the 2004 outstanding baccalaureate college professor. Bob has been a member of the Williams College Department of English since 1972 and the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English since 1994. He has published on a variety of subjects, including Shakespeare and Joyce. His works included On Becoming a Teacher of Teachers and JocoseriousJoyce: The Fate of Folly in Ulysses. He received the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching in 1998. At college Bob was an English major and earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Bob Burka wrote that the second annual D.C. mini-reunion dinner went very well. John Isaacs and Bob are creating a Washington tradition. Attendees included Bob and Maria Burka, Phyllis Liebert, Bruce Chasan, John and Amy Isaacs, Chuck Sherman '66, Bill MacCarty, Chuck Hobbie, Bill and Jenny Lamb, Brad Langley, Sam Ostrow, Bill Judd, Wayne Beyer, Tony Newkirk, Larry Leiken and Wayne and Beverly Johnson. A photo is available on the '67 class Web page. Bob is still practicing law at Foley & Lardner LLP. Maria continues as a program director at the National Science Foundation. The Burka children are well on the way to their own careers. The oldest, Jackie (Princeton '96 and Co- lumbia M.B.A. '01) is a VP at Merrill Lynch in institutional sales and trading; Michael (Penn '98) is on "The Street," and youngest Jennifer '01 is a second-year law student at Georgetown.
My news is that, with the help of Doug Leitch '65 of the development office, I established a fund endowing a professorship at the College. My legacy includes my musings and my graduate students; why not endow some professors to continue my research and teaching interests? Consider becoming a member of the Bartlett Tower Society to support the College.
Remember the 60th birthday party during October 7-9 and help Bruce Pacht with the party and 40th reunion planning. There will be a barbecue dinner on Friday, October 7, at John Wasson's barn in Lebanon. Saturday the class will have the Base Lodge at Quechee. RSVP Bruce Pacht at bruce@uds.org to attend.
