Writing this in early February, I must note how tough January was to 1939. We lost four class stalwarts in that month: Bob North, Bob Schwartz, Bob Clymer and Bill Tomkins. We also learned of the death of three wives or widows: Audrey, wife of Dudley Richards; Jane, widow of Ward F. Porter; and Dorothy, widow of Ernest J. Smith. Tim, one son of Ernest and Dorothy Smith, wrote that he, his eight brothers, one sister and their families were holding a memorial mass for their parents on February 19 and also planned to make a memorial gift to the Dartmouth College Fund.
A recent note from Ev Woodman states that he had just finished two months in Mary Hitchcock and New London, New Hampshire, hospitals recuperating from a third replacement of his left hip. With two others on the right side, Ev now has had a total of five hip jobs, probably a record for our class.
Congratulations to Lou Oberdorfer for his selection by the Rockefeller Centers board of visitors at Dartmouth to receive the 2006- 2007 Nelson A. Rockefeller Distinguished Public Service Award. Past recipients of this prestigious honor include such well-known alumni as Dr. C. Everett Koop '37, Stephen Bosworth '61, Robert Reich '68 and former Maine governors Angus King '66 and John McKernan '70. Lou has been U.S. district judge for the District of Columbia since November 1977 and was nominated for this award by class president Lou Oldershaw.
