Big Picture: Towering Presence

James O. Freedman, Dartmouth's 15th president (from 1987 to 1998), died on March 21 after a long battle with cancer. A forceful proponent of the liberal arts and a prolific writer, Freedman recalled his first visit to Dartmouth in a 1998 DAM interview: "I remember that I saw the campus in high school when I was a debater and We came up here for a tournament.
