Spring returns to the North Country and the sights of students enjoying the sun on the Green are not the same as we remember but are no less welcome. Baseball and women's lacrosse are doing well and spring foot ball practice started this week. Coach Teevens is noncommittal in a positive manner even as the east stands are removed for the new athletic facility. We longtime east stand rooters are wondering about this fall.
The Dartmouth Figure Skating Club has completed its third season. The creation of Mike McGean and daughter and coach Loren McGean '99, the team went on to the Eastern qualifiers, and won there, then on to San Jose for the nationals and became national champions for the third straight year. Boston University was second and the University of Delaware, a perennial contender, was third. Captain Taylor Grant '06 was a strong contributor. Fourteen skaters made the trip. Another stalwart, Holly Ponichtera '07, won the coveted Wearers of the Green Award. Previous winners included both Mike and Lois McGean for their World Ice Dancing feats. Other previous winners were Jack DeGange and Dave Orr '57. Our class' support for this team is appreciated since, as a non-varsity group, the figure skating team receives minimal College support.
A secondhand postcard from Mara and Quent Kopp tells of their travels in India last February. While passing up a dip in the Ganges, they did manage an elephant ride in Agra and the traditional camel ride in Jodpur.
A reported sighting of the furtive Gunther Perdue, due, this one by Jay Urstadt, stable and balanced he, who attended a wedding in Connecticut, where Gunther entertained on the zither. What next?
One of the new initiatives undertaken by the College is a series of dinners, the Daniel Webster dinners, honoring the soon-to-graduate senior class. With the '06 class and alumni were B.J. and Doug Thomson, who attended recently and were suitably impressed. Their table included seven women, described by Doug as "poised, smart, ambitious and very attractive to boot." They all spoke of their love of Dartmouth and the great time and education they have received. They came from all over the United States and the world, studied abroad and were involved in very worthwhile community projects. Four were going on to graduate studies. Doug sees the evening as illustrative of how the College is stronger, better and more relative than ever. Another indication of the changes that have come to our College on the Hill.
