Hail, noble '72s, well met!
Old Man Winter has finally released his grip on our fair Mother and now she basks in the warmth of one of the earliest springs in recent memory. Where the Green would usually resemble a pro football field with natural turf after an overtime game played in a downpour, it instead looks like the fairway at any top-notch country club! This morning your humble scribe even managed to spend a few delightful hours on the '72 safety boat surveying the banks of the beautiful Connecticut River.Ah, life is sweet!
From the realm of academe comes news our esteemed classmate William Kirby has elected to step down this summer after four years as dean of the faculty of arts and sciences at (be still my Green blood!) Harvard. Highly respected by the faculty and fellow administrators, William is assuming oversight of university-wide initiatives on China. Best wishes, William!
Word has reached me from Southern Methodist University that our classmate Ed Wisneski fares quite well as the senior assistant athletics director. Ed created the PALS (that's Preparing Achievers for Life Success) program at SMU 10 years ago to enhance career and professional development opportunities for their student athletes. In networking of the type we Dartmouth alums champion, Ed's program has spawned a second generation, as many of his early proteges are now in positions to hire current students. This helps them to round out their resumes while still undergrads and gives them a solid leg up professionally. Happy 10th, and kudos, Ed!
Tenth.. .hmmm.. .sounds a bit like.. .ah! A reunion! A 35th reunion! Yes, my brothers, that wonderful opportunity to gather, catch up on past times, create new times, kindle old friendships and forge new ones will soon be upon us. June 11-14,2007. It's just around the corner, so mark it on your calendars. Our esteemed reunion chair John DeRegt is soliciting ideas for reunion activities. Please let your wishes be known at jderegt@ spencerstuart.com or (203) 326-3773.
This column will reach you scant days before our mini-reunion meister Shel Prentice hosts Return to Squam Lake, July 21-23.To those who will be gathering there, hats off! I'll render an accounting of the festivities in my next issue.
I close on a sad note, my friends. I've learned from Ken Jacobs that our classmate Andrew Cote passed away September 17,2005. Ken tells me Andy once rigged a roll of yellow computer paper to his typewriter and turned in an 8-foot scroll for an English term paper. Apparently the prof wasn't impressed! In an early spark of musical inspiration, a passion Andy followed throughout his life, he co-produced the then-famous ditty, "Drinkin' Brew with the Bro' (in the Hou' on the Row)," recorded at his Zeta Psi studio. Often seen around campus in his "bwana" helmet, Andy didn't graduate with us, but he'll always be a '72. Our sincerest condolences go out to his mom, brothers and their families. A more complete obituary will follow.
