Hail, noble '72s far and wide! Your humble scribes mail boxes have been rather empty, so this months column will be one of reflection and, let's face it, unabashed piracy from the good work of my esteemed co-scribe John Rockwell, whose well-crafted and in formative newsletter will have reached you a few weeks before this issue of zheAlumniMag!
As I compose this missal the newest crop of pea Green shmen-types are gathering in front of Robinson Hall, learning to dance the "Salty Dog Rag" with the same wild abandon we shared 38 years ago. The faces and to some degree the attire change with each autumn but the sense of excitement and anticipation, often masking a healthy dose of nervousness at being cast adrift in this new environment, seem to remain constant across the decades. I would dearly love to have heard (or to hear, if some of you wish to share!) some of the preparatory conversations between our brothers and their offspring who are joining the ranks of todays undergraduates as they prepared to depart for Hanover!
Around campus workers are scrambling to put the finishing touches on our new football field, a slew of new dorms, the Mac Lean engineering building at the Thayer School and the Kemeny-Haldeman math building. Yet for all of these wonderful, much-needed and, I might suggest architecturally very attractive additions to the campus, the Dartmouth campus as we knew it still retains much of the same character. It is still a small college, gentlemen, there is just more of it to love! I think those who make the trek home next June for our 35 th reunion after any number of years away will be very pleasantly surprised.
Yes, gents, the days are ticking off rapidly toward our gathering next June, and our estimable reunion chair John DeRegt is hard at work marshalling the rest of your reunion committee to make this a wonderful gathering! John Rockwell has touched on some of the preliminary plans, and, as promised, both of us will be assailing you with news, information and a host of enticements to join us in Hanover June 11-14, 2007. We're hearing there's a lot of interest in folks making the trek a full weeks vacation in New Hampshire. For those who might wish to explore this option more fully, please let me know and I'll share some ideas for other activities to complement your stay with us. In the meantime, please share what's goingon in your lives. Also, please let me, John Rockwell or Marc Josephson (marc@packetalk.net), who has volunteered to be our Webmaster, know what your e-mail address is so we can improve upon our class communication!
Until next we meet, be well!
Yours always in Green.
