this reading, those among us who are reasonadly gregarious, football and foliage addicted and "class" conscious will have sent in reservations for the fall mini, or are poised to do so. The Yale game will be a clue as to how far Coach Buddy Teevens has brought the Green back to gridiron respectability. The schedule is familiar: early bird dinner gathering at the Norwich Inn on Thursday evening followed on Friday by the Ken McLain Memorial bash at Hopkins, 6:30 p.m. Saturday starts at 8:30 with the class meeting at Rockefeller Center, followed by lunch and the game. The class banquet is in the Wheelock Room of the Inn and includes the Pick Axe Awards. The farewell brunch is at Anne and George Hartmann's in Lyme on Sunday morning. A new beginning.
From Paul Woodbury, his discovery in Baker Library of a collection of medieval and early modern manuscripts, the gift of Mark Lansburgh. Now a part of the Rauner Special Collections Library, they include account ledgers from the 13th century, an 1100-year-old glossary, a grant of arms by Charles V, a papal bull and, from the 20th century, a printed book from 1948 and a 1956 broadside. The collection reflects Mark's early interest in calligraphy and early printing acquired while a student and during his printing career.
The women's lacrosse bid for an NCAA championship fell short against defending champion Northwestern. Carrying a 4-3 lead into the final 23 minutes, the Green lost in a tough game, 7-4. Previous national championships for Dartmouth were men's skiing in 1958 and 1976 (with Colorado), football in 1925, and men's golf in 1921. Of course, our championship figure skating team has won its third national championship, but not with the NCAA label.
A recent series of briefings at the College titled "Inside the Dartmouth Experience," one which we attended, describes the expectations of new students and the goals of the College in meeting them while continuing toward becoming a foremost teaching institution. With the smallest student body and next-to-lowest endowment in the Ivy League, Dartmouth's ranking and reputation are among the nations highest. Cause for pride.
Hope to see you at the mini.
