»> MOST RECENT WINNERS share a common thread

"Dartmouth alums are so passionate," says Dartmouth Young Alumni Distinguished Service Award winner Sill Dean '89. "There isn't a spot in the world that has more passion, and that makes Dartmouth different from other colleges—its alums just care so much." He echoes the sentiments of many of the past year's seven Alumni Award recipients—Raymond Truncellito '49, David Orr '57, Frank Harrington '50, Clark Griffiths '57, David Peck '68, Bob Conn '61 and Bill Higgins '66—and his fellow Young Alumni Award recipients-Kaja Schuppert '95, Trevor Burgess '94, P.H. Mullen '91 and Kate Aiken '92. Some other thoughts about Dartmouth from the winners; "Dartmouth has contributed significantly to my life values," says Truncellito. "At our senior year football dinner President Dickey told all in attendance that we would return home and become leaders in our respective communities, and I believed him!" "My favorite memory? Midnight swimming visits to Storrs Pond via a back dirt road by a bunch of us in [classmate] Jack Babson's jeep," says Conn. "The Dartmouth of today, thankfully, reflects more closely society as a whole," says Burgess. "When I was a student people of color were underrepresented, gay people were underrepresented and women were still underrepresented. This year the College saw the election of an openly gay Student Assembly president—how fantastic is that?" Says Mullen: "1 should have studied far less and explored the world far more." "When you attend and graduate from Dartmouth, you are joining a family," says Peck. "It extends across generations past and to come. It creates bonds of affection, grounded in a unique place and profound shared experience. In my Aires and Glee Club travels and at reunions, I have met an alum from the class of 1904 who was a tackle in the first game at Harvard Stadium and have interviewed incoming 2010s who haven't even arrived yet! More than a century of Dartmouth men and women...and a common thread is love of Dartmouth." Go to www.alumni.dartmouth.edu/awards to read winners' award citations.
