In September I trekked up to Hanover with our president Mike McClintock for Class Officers Weekend. Amidst a large turnout from 'round the girdled earth, it was clear that new Director of Alumni Affairs Dave Spalding '76 is leading a concerted push to re-engage alumni. Among my other observations: The Green is greener. This could simply be a nostalgia-tinged view through green-colored glasses. Or maybe the heavy rains of summer did it. Surely any future heavy rains will not render Memorial Field a mud bowl, because the sparkling new synthetic turf is now installed. Thus coach Buddy Teevens '79 can still rely on the passing game in November. There is no truth to the rumor that the administration will force Phi Delt to install that same turf. Speaking of Dartmouth football, the Friends of Football are playing a key role in its revival and I urge you to support them: friends.of.football@ dartmouth.edu or 6083 Davis Varsity House, Hanover, NH 03755.

I caught up with Ellen Remsen Webb, who lives a busy life with her husband and three sons in Baltimore. Ellen spent some time with Dennis Roy this summer when he and his family paid a visit. She attended the30thanniversaryofDartmouth field hockey in September along with Gretchen Kruysman and Carol Krensky Huston. Because NCAA rnles apparently prohibit alumni-varsity games (maybe NCAA is afraid that cushy no-show jobs will be negotiated at halftime), our classmates whacked around golf balls at the country club instead. Ellen reported that her goddaughter, who also happens to be John Cholnoky's daughter, matriculated this fall. I dutifully rang up John, who confirmed that good news and reminded me that his and Amy's (Cammann Cholnoky '77) oldest son is a junior who is cox for the varsity heavyweight crew. John has the distinction of having worked at the same place—General Re in Greenwich, Connecticut—since graduation. To my knowledge only Hans Morris (Smith Barney) and Bill White (Continental Bank) can match that. Since I see Hans a lot and know his bona fides, I rang up "Shoes" to confirm his. Sure enough, Bill has been at Continental and successors since college. He and his wife and two children are doing well, living in (that is, near) fashionable Lincoln Park and rooting for the renascent Bears. Bill also serves on the regional board of the American Cancer Society.

Bob Garry and family are about as fully engaged as is humanly possible. In addition to his day job at Greenwich Capital Bobby sits on the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation board, runs the Friends of Dartmouth Lacrosse and coaches various youth sports. He is also one of the founders of the Positive Coaching Alliance, whose noble (and timely) purpose is to "get some of the craziness out" of youth sports, especially the overzealousness of parents. Their mantra: "Coaches coach, players play and parents cheer." Bob and his wife, Leigh, who chairs the board of the Windward School, which serves learning-challenged kids, have a daughter and two sons who play all variety of sports. I'll bet they benefit from positive coaching as well.
