Every fall I find my mind nostalgically returns to back-to-school thoughts, even though it's been years since I received my last degree. As such, it was a very seasonal e-mail I received from Jonathan Good, who was not only on the fall 1992 London history F.S.P. alongwith me and my now-husband Andrew Hymn, but is still living the collegiate life as a history professor.
Jonathan is keeping family and career closely intertwined as an assistant professor of history at Reinhardt College, a small liberal arts college in Waleska, Georgia, north of Atlanta. He writes, "They have also hired my wife, Anne (a fellow grad student from Minnesota), and we now constitute half of the history department." Jonathan is teaching their western civilization survey series known as "Plato to NATO" as well as upper-level courses in his area of specialty, late medieval England. "I do enjoy telling anecdotes from the London history F.S.P. One of my goals is to set up a similar program for Reinhardt, once I get my book done."
Jonathan and his wife also recently colla borated on an even more important project: "My wife, Anne, gave birth on July 4th to our first child, a girl. We've named her Susanna Dorothea and she is very sweet!" Jonathan was flattered when I let him know we eat breakfast with him every morning, as we have a picture in our kitchen of the ex-F.S.P.ers hanging out at the London grave of Karl Marx.
Moving a little south to Atlanta, it's my pleasure to share news from our dear former secretary Nihad Farooq. After successfully defending her dissertation in English, "Sensing Subjects: Ethnographic Modernity from Charles Darwin to Richard Wright," from Duke University this past December, Nihad has traded in her ice scrapers for ceiling fans and the transience of grad school for the tenure track. As she is evereloquent and much more of an old pro at this than I am, I'll let her speak for herself. "As of Monday morning I will begin my new post as assistant professor of American studies/race, biology and culture at Georgia Tech. If you would like to discuss these or other less weighty matters with me (like why Atlanta Falcons' fans appear to be in a bizarre state of denial about Michael Vick's doom), you can reach me at nmfarooq@earthlink.net. Please stay in touch and visit often!" ten!"
I had also heard from Leah Tarpy that Kate Novack was up to some amazing things, so I begged for her info and then shot an appropriately pathetic e-mail her way. I'm so pleased to report it worked! Kate lives in Brooklyn with her husband, with whom she is currently finishing a documentary feature film about the Italian family behind the famed N.Y.C. restaurant Le Cirque. She is also a freelance writer for Time mayazine and Time Style & Design, Time's fashion supplement. Cool cool cool!
I also asked Kate about another mutual friend, Rebecca Obstler, who, she reported, is living in Rome. Kate wasn't certain about more spe- cific details. I'm pleased to say that Rebecca heard I was looking for her and sent me an e-mail as I was putting the finishing touches on this column-but, amazingly, I'm out of room! So tune in next-DAM for that update and keep checking your e-mail, people—you never know when you'll be hearing from me.
