Among the three candidates selected by the Alumni Council to fill a vacancy in the alumni trustees is our own Sandy Alderson. He was selected in accordance with our association of alumni constitution and we are all asked to participate in the voting held from April through May 15. Sandy is currently the CEO of the San Diego Padres after a lengthy career in Major League Baseball. He is a member of the advisory board for the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, a trustee of the California Historical Society and former chair of the board of directors of Interplast, an organization providing reconstructive surgery for children in develop-
ing countries. Dick Glovsky mailed an actual letter to describe his recent activities. Dick is chair of his firm's employment law practice in Boston and has recently published his first DVD on "non-competition agreements" available on the net at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Two years ago Dick married a long-ago love from high school days and their blended family now in cludes six children and two grandchildren, all of whom are providing him with great joy and new enthusiasm.
Several lengthy phone calls with Peter Schaeffer have brought me up to date on his recent experiences. Peter's story is fraught with drama and no small amount of personal loss. After graduation he spent 12 years in advertising, moving to securities trading in 1981. He joined Prudential in 1986 to work with his father, who had long suffered from polio and who died that year. Peter experienced several multiple sclerosis episodes in the 1980s, but it was not until 1989 that he was definitively diagnosed with MS. In 1992 he and Frannie moved to Long Island and he continued to work with Prudential from the East Hampton office, and by the next year he was forced to use a wheelchair and by 1995 Peter required 24-hour assistance. He worked until 2001, although the last four years his office was in his home. Frannie underwent surgery for ovarian cancer in 2004, and today happily reports she has been cancer-free for nearly two years. The two spent a couple months this winter in Phoenix and are exploring the possibility of a move from the Northeast. Despite his restrictions, and with Frannie at his side, Peter says life's possibilities seem endless. He was proud to report he celebrated 20 years of sobriety in December. Peter keeps in contact with many of our classmates, and has provided the enclosed information on Steve Harris.
The news about Steve is his position as the Democratic staff director and chief counsel for the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Steve has worked with senators and Senate committees for manyyears. He lives in Washington with his wife, Cindy, and they have found the time to raise two sons. Steve says he is thinking about what life outside the Senate might provide in the foreseeable future.
We are saddened by the loss of another two classmates, Leon Myrianthopoulos, who passed away October 17, and Vic Chaltain, who died October 29.
Please stay in touch with one another.
