Ted Barstow wants me to remind you of the coming fall events. Again the Class will hold its mini-reunion over the weekend of the Princeton game. There will as usual be a program of class events on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th and we have rooms reserved at Howard Johnson's. The Class will put up a deposit for these reservations but Ted must have your application in hand by September 1.
On October 26 Harvard comes to Hanover No reservations are being made for that weekend and no class events are being planned. Anyone planning to stay over should make, their own reservations early. Ted suggests Howard Johnson's, the Holiday Inn, or the new Susse Chalet Motor Lodge - all with White River telephone numbers and addresses. Their area code is 802 and their zip code 05001.
Ted goes on to comment as follows about the recent Winter Carnival: "The Glee Club, with as many girls as boys in it, put on a wonderful show. The girls, bless 'em, looked pretty once more, neatly dressed and well scrubbed. And the fraternity snow sculptures: Two years ago, practically nil; last year, better; this year, in spite of miserable snow conditions (frozen gook), they were back to normal. I take that to be a good omen."
In light of the recent events in Chile I'm sure you will be interested in the following from Gus Meleny in Silver Spring, Md.:
"Betty and I made our second trip to South America to visit our daughter Jane and her husband who is connected with the United States embassy in Santiago. On our first trip down there three years ago, we toured most of the South American countries, but this trip we wanted to visit our two new granddaughters, age 2½ and 8 months, so stayed with the family in Santiago for two weeks and spent two weeks in and 8 months, so stayed with the family in and 8 months, so stayed with the family in - and 8 months, so stayed with the family inand 8 months, so stayed with the family in and 8 months, so stayed with the family in a summer resort on the Pacific Coast where we enjoyed surf swimming in the 50° ocean, picnics on the rocky shores, golf on a hilly coast nine-hole course with sand greens and only cows and sheep to 'cut the grass' on the 'fairways.
"Santiago has a beautiful location with the towering Andes mountains nearby and wonderful spring weather starting in November when we were there. The upheaval of the Allende government had calmed down but a 9 o'clock curfew limited evening activities and driving out to the mountains we were often stopped for investigation by soldiers, looking for Allende 'friends' or refugees from unfriendly other countries.
"On our way home, we stopped off in MeXico City for a week and visited all parts of that interesting city. Also a tour to Tasco, the 'Silver City' and Cuernavaca, where hotel and garden type dining facilities far exceed those available in the U.S.A.
"Betty and I moved out here to Rossmoor 'Leisure World', a year ago in anticipation of my semi-retirement on January 1, 1974. We enjoy the simplified living in a townhouse and a change to meet many new friends, play golf on a course 100 yards away, duplicate bridge, and still keep in close touch with our other three children and their families, nearby."
Bob Smith's name last appeared in this column in 1935. I'm particularly happy therefore to pass along the following news about Bob - from Gus Meleny's letter to me:
"We have visited with Bob Smith and his wife Deborah several times in the last year since they live only about 25 miles away. Called him for another get-together last week but they had just returned from a five-week trip to Louisiana and Bob wanted to wait until we could play some golf during more springlike weather. He seems t0 be in good shape, is completely retired, and plays golf at every opportunity."
Often, when I have run short of news I have toyed with the idea of confounding you by appealing to your wives. The following from Harold Dean Baker's wife Helen tends to confirm my leanings in this direction:
"As you probably know, Dean has been retired for a few years. He spends much time gardening, playing golf and bridge.
"He has two married daughters and eight grandchildren. His daughter Penny is married to a writer and Patience is married to Ronald Spiers, the Ambassador to the Bahamas. Penny's husband David Bergamini and Ronald are both Dartmouth graduates - class of '48.
"We have two sons, Harold Dean III who is a sophomore at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., and Todd Ballou who is entering the Rhode Island School of Design in the fall.
"We thoroughly enjoyed the Reunion last June and do hope there'll be another coming up."
Another feather in the cap of Cap Palmer is the Jay Gordon Memorial Award, presented by the Information Producers, of America. Maker through Parthenon Films of business-sponsored documentaries for some 20 years now, Cap already holds a goodly number of national and international awards for films he has made in the fields of communication, petroleum, transportation, finance, insurance, political education, health, and marketing. This is in addition to career number one as a businessman and career number two as a writer of articles, books, and radio and movie scripts.
And from Bert Teagle: "Just a line to let you know I sent a photo of Rosalie and me to Ruel Smith as requested for the 'Golden Review'. Our 50th was an event that we will long remember and it will be interesting to have a souvenir as a remembrance.
Yesterday we had a pleasant surprise. BillGratz was visiting a friend here in Rancho Santa Fe. In their conversation Bill learned I also lived here so we got together and had a very pleasant afternoon. Bill and I were both part of the Minnesota delegation of 1923."
Invariably 1899 is referred to as the last year of the 19th century. Is it really? Seems to me the 20th century began with the year 1901. A friend of mine who, as was I, was born in 1900 whim- sically refers to himself as the last of the old fashioned babies - and I believe he is! Since ac- cording to recent count 82 others of us were also born in 1900 we probably should settle this important and currently moot question while there is still time left to consider it objectively. Comments anyone?
