In recent years the class has held, between our quintennial get-togethers in Hanover, a number of successful mini-reunions—in Palm City, Florida; Washington, D.C.; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But, as everyone who has participated in putting together or attending these events well knows, the efforts required to plan, organize and execute them are anything but "mini." Vic Trautwein, our current mini-reunion chairman, is currently kicking around ideas for future gatherings, which may reach fruition in coming months.
Wholly apart from these "official" events there are more localized meetings—generally luncheons—held on a quarterly or annual basis among 52ers living within driving distance of each other. Among the most enduring of these has been a Christmas season luncheon at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, originally put together by Pete Zischke about 20 years ago. Last year's gathering took place December 12 and attracted 10 Californians (Pete, John Bartlett, Dave Brew, Grover Bryant, Jack Clow, George Grosshans, Dave Larson, Nick Skylor, Andy Stern and Jim Streng, the last-mentioned a non-graduate but a regular and welcome participant). Also present were visiting firemen, class president Dorn McGrath and newsletter editor Bill Montgomery. In addition to the festive camaraderie of the session, there was a quiet discussion of the Colleges trustee controversy; the locals, not as familiar with the case as the out-of-towners, appreciated the update.
Another group that meets quarterly is centered in Washington, D.C. Among the regulars are the aforementioned Dorn McGrath, Kayo Cox, Ted Fellowes, Jim Fowler, Dick Hull, Gordy Kay, Frank Mate, Bill Sweet and "Dimp" Wagner.
Space limitations preclude providing details about the other groups of classmates that meet on a more or less regularly scheduled basis in several cities around the country. Perhaps the largest is in the Upper (Connecticut River) Valley, which draws about 15 to quarterly get-togethers.These include at least one dinner in a resort setting joined in by wives or companions. Any classmate wanting more information so as either to join with an existing group or put together a new one, get in touch and we'll try to assist.
