The members of the MALS Alumni Association board had a busy summer. On July 8 they hosted the association’s annual luncheon and meeting at the Hanover Inn. Christopher Wren ’57, New York Times reporter and foreign correspondent for 29 years and currently adjunct professor of journalism in the MALS program, was the guest speaker. He gave a fascinating talk on what he experienced while reporting from some of the world’s hotspots. The talk was titled “Does Journalism Have a Future?” and he shared his many insights on what has been gained and what has been lost with the current news as entertainment, instant news in the form of sound bites and around-the-clock news cycle. The program was followed by the association board meeting, which was open to all alumni. There was an excellent turnout of alumni for the occasion. Board member Maggie Montgomery (MALS’99) coordinated the event, and her hard work was responsible for its success. Other alumni present were Roland Adams (MALS’98), Chris Bannerman (MALS’99), Barbara Barnes (MALS’72), Mike Beahan (MALS’97), Katherine Britton (MALS’05), Stephan Cantor (MALS’08), Judy Chypre (MALS’99), Melinda Evans (MALS’02), Kathy Fortin (MALS’07), Grace Hill (MALS’75), Wole Ojurongbe (MALS’08), Margret Richard (MALS’85), Allen Sherman (MALS’04), Nancy Silliman ’95 (MALS’96), Marilyn Welsh (MALS’91) and Julia Lloyd Wright (MALS’99).
The MALS Alumni Association will hold another Works in Progress session at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 23, during Dartmouth Home coming weekend. The first session was held in February and was greatly enjoyed by current MALS students, alumni and faculty. It is an opportunity for students to present progress and problems with their thesis work and to invite comments and questions from the audience. The session will include time for everyone to socialize and enjoy wine, cheese and finger food. At this writing we are not yet certain where on campus this event will be held. Please call the MALS office at (603) 646-3592 for further details. Following the Works in Progress session we will line up for the Dartmouth Night parade at 6:30. All arts and sciences graduate alumni are invited to join us for the march. We will provide you with banners to carry and a convertible to follow. For the past several years we have been placed at the beginning of the parade. It is important that we have a throng of alumni to remind the Dartmouth community that we are a proud presence on campus.
Seth Podolsky (ECS’98) completed his residency in emergency medicine in 2008 and then continued to work in and around New York City until this spring. After a trip through Southeast Asia and Japan, he returned to the Upper Valley. In June he began his new position at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as an assistant professor, working as an emergency medicine physician. He is pleased to be back and we are very happy with his decision, though we hope we don’t run into him at work.
Lisa Chau (MALS’06) recently accepted the position of assistant director at the Tuck School of Business after working for one year at Dartmouth Medical School with education and special projects. She also worked closely with author Brian D’Amato for the past 13 years, doing research, proofreading and editing. His second novel, In the Courts of the Sun, was recently released to positive reviews. Lisa loves to photograph, write and travel and is very interested in social media trends. She is currently serving as vice president of the Wellesley Club of New Hampshire and would love to hear from friends in New York City and Hanover.
