As the author of this column I keep learning things about my classmates, such as that Newc Eldredge was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his activities with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. As a “first scout,” Newc helped lead the surprise attack against the Germans on Mount Belvedere in northern Italy in January of 1945. I also learned that Gordie Hood was a star athlete in high school. He was recently honored as the first inductee to the hall of fame of the Beechwood (Park Hills, Kentucky) High School, where he lettered for four years in basketball and in 1945 was leading rusher on the football squad. Shoulder injuries cut short his gridiron career at Dartmouth. Tom Ruggles regretfully announces that the excellent spade work conducted by Nob Hovde and the Harry VanBenschottens in lining up a program for next winter’s mini-reunion in Naples, Florida, has gone for naught. His poll of classmates did not turn up sufficient interest to warrant the effort. Dave Taylor’s lifelong aversion to dogs has been completely reversed by Coco, a 12-pound poodle that has taken up residence in Dave and Karen’s house. Dave also sent me a shocking March 8 article about the Hanover police’s policy on alcohol by columnist Jim Kenyon (jim.kenyon@valley. net) titled “Pickled Fish in a Barrel.” During the winter we enjoyed seeing the Sardellas, Fauvers, McIlwains, Harneds, Hoods and Joan Mauk. Contact Joel Leavitt for a great story about a 5-year-old boy who shot a nine- hole 41! Joel also reports that in addition to seeing the group of ’50s named above he and Gail also dined with Frank Harrington and Rosemary. The Woods Hole (Massachusetts) Research Center honored its founder, George M. Woodwell, on his 80th birthday with a two-day, five-event ceremony during which it was announced that the center’s building will be named the George M. Woodwell Building. Congratulations, George. Warm regards to all.
