We have various news items from classmates this month. Norrie Nims writes that he and Sue wintered in New Mexico—and if you or I lived in Alaska, as do Norrie and Sue, we would want to winter somewhere south, too. They also enjoyed visiting New York City and seeing the Dartmouth/Princeton game.
Jerry Scott was at the other end of the world from Norrie’s Alaska home. Jerry “traveled to Antarctica in January, taking a nine-day trip from Ushuaia, Argentina. Crossing the Drake Passage was difficult; winds were over 70 miles per hour. I am proud to say I was one of the small group who could carry his breakfast plate and orange juice to the table at the same time.”
David Marr congratulates Jim Bybee and Wayne French on the 50th reunion book they produced and distributed, which “made it half way around the world to reach me in Canberra.” That must have been a lot of postage, Wayne! Doug Wise and Joanne recently visited New Zealand, down under in David’s part of the world. Like most who travel there Doug says that New Zealand is “great!” Both Doug and Joanne are owed great thanks for their work staging our 50th.
Traveler Bob Foot reports, “In September Ginny and I met classmate Donn Leaf and his Dorothy in San Francisco for a trip to Beijing, where we were greeted by Ambassador Ken and Judy Yalowitz from Dartmouth’s Dickey Center. In addition to touring Beijing, meeting with our ambassador to China and seeing the Great Wall, we were amazed at the terracotta soldiers at Xian; the largest city in the world, Chongqing (33 million); the Three Gorges and dam on the Yangzi; and the museum in Shanghai, among other sites. On return to San Francisco Ginny and I visited senior-year roommate Tom Chatfield and his Marge.”
Another classmate staying busy is Sam Swanson, now celebrating the 15th anniversary of his legal firm specializing in estate planning. An author, having contributed to two estate planning handbooks, Legacy and Generations, Sam also serves as secretary of the Bach Festival of Philadelphia. Warren Priest writes, “Had a busy year selling our Avon, Connecticut, home of 40 years and moving to a condo in neighboring Canton that oversees the Farmington River and is centrally located among our three children.”
Sadly, through the years some classmates drop out of contact, but Doug Wheeler and Will Hartfeldt found one of them; Bob Berg is married (to Maria, an acclaimed restaurateur) and lives in Mexico City, where he manages Berg Marketing & Research. Bob has accomplished more than 3,000 research studies of public opinion focused on subjects ranging from dog food to presidential election campaigns which, when you consider it, are not all that disparate. Still among missing classmates are Jack Zipes, Dick Geary, Chuck (not Charles B.) Hotchkiss, Charlie Steinhacker and Bob Batson. Anyone know where any of them are now located? Please let me know if you do.
