Linda Landrigan (MALS’97) arranged the first MALS student and alumni meetup in October at Murphy’s on the Green in Hanover. Her idea for the meetup was supported by the MALS Alumni Association council, of which she is a member. The event was held to encourage communication between MALS students and alumni in a relaxed, social setting. The students have an opportunity to share their stories of how they chose the MALS program and what they expect to get out of it, and to ask questions about life on campus and in the Upper Valley. In turn, alumni are treated to some fascinating stories and a chance to share their own experiences. The Alumni Association will continue to sponsor meetups throughout the new year. Students and alumni will be notified of dates and locations through email.
Nancy Serrell (MALS’00) was featured in a staff snapshot in an edition of Dartmouth Now last August 11. Nancy began her work at Dartmouth 20 years ago as a science writer. For the past eight years she has been the director of science and technology outreach in the provost’s office. According to her snapshot, her job involves helping faculty share their knowledge with people outside of Dartmouth. She helped launch the office of science and technology outreach to address changing expectations of academic researchers, especially scientists. She helps researchers figure out who could benefit from learning about their work and how to explain their findings to different audiences, from the general public to policy makers and industry. “We have developed an effective forum for our scientists in the Science Pubs at Salt Hill Pub in Lebanon, New Hampshire,” she says. “Our scientists have developed quite a fan base.”
On February 18, 2015, Barbara DeFelice (MALS’99) was also featured in a Dartmouth Now staff snapshot. Barbara helped bring about the first DartmouthX massive open online course. She has worked at Dartmouth for almost 30 years and was the library liaison to the environmental studies program when Andrew Friedland, the Richard and Jane Pearl Professor in Environmental Studies, was chosen to present his course, “Introduction to Environmental Studies.” She says she sees DartmouthX as an opportunity to think about Dartmouth’s role in creating open educational resources, a launching point for conversations about our commitment to contribute in the global educational realm.
