Dartmouth’s Veterans Appreciation Week, November 5-15, was marked by more than a dozen events sponsored by the College, the Dartmouth Undergraduate Veterans Association and the Dartmouth Uniformed Service Association (DUSA). On November 6 the College dedicated its Dartmouth War Memorials at Memorial Field. The featured speakers at the ceremony included DUSA members Mike Lauria ’05, a former Air Force para-rescueman; Pete Frederick ’65, a former Foreign Service officer and the vice president of the Sphinx Foundation; Nathan Bruschi ’10, a former Navy officer and the executive director of DUSA; and President Emeritus James Wright. Rand Beers ’64 was honored by DUSA at its annual Veterans Day banquet on November 7 in the Collis Common in Hanover. Beers received the James Wright Award for Distinguished Service and is part of the long green line of Dartmouth alumni who have served their country in the military. A graduate of Dartmouth’s Navy ROTC program, he served as a Marine Corps officer in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. The award is named after Wright, who was in attendance and also is a Marine Corps veteran. Winnie Huang ’92, chair of the award’s nominating committee, presented the award.
The Dartmouth Club of Hampton Roads enjoyed a spectacular evening on March 20 during its 2015 spring dinner at the La Yaca Restaurant in Williamsburg, Virginia. Alumni from the classes of 1947 through 2018, including Tuck School alums, gathered with family and friends to eat good food, laugh and have a good time. Participants included Dick Hollerith ’47, Jean and Justin Smith ’51, Hal Bernsen ’58, John Ryan ’58, Sally and Allen Muglia ’60, Sally and Jim Nolan ’60, Linda and Donald Baker ’61, Philip Davey ’67, Nels Armstrong ’71, Elsa and John Orange ’71, Kerry and Peter Mellette ’80, Julia Adie, Tu’86, Christopher Geddis ’10, Kadian Campbell ’11, Claire Hunter ’12, Caitlin Foley ’13 and Lydia Jabs ’18 with her parents, Eric and Kathleen Jabs.
Dartmouth Lawyers Association (DLA) was a proud supporter of Law Day celebrations at Dartmouth on April 30. Yale Law School professor Heather Gerken gave the Volk Lecture on “Dark Money & Shadow Parties” and on May 1 there was a panel discussion on “Money in Politics” led by John Greabe ’85. DLA members enjoyed a rooftop reception on June 2 with U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster ’78, who represents Hanover in Congress, hosted by DLA president Howard Morse ’81 at the Washington, D.C., office of Cooley LLP. On July 30 DLA hosted a reception at the law firm of Locke Lord for its members attending the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in Chicago. Tom Bush ’76 and Julie Webb ’04 organized the event. DLA hosted its members at a night baseball game between the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins at Citi Field in New York on September 15. DLA members and guests had the opportunity to meet Sandy Alderson ’69, the general manager of the Mets. DLA and the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network hosted a joint networking reception and panel discussion on “Legal Issues Facing the Startup From the Inside” on October 20 in Washington. DLA held its first women of Dartmouth holiday networking event on the evening of December 3 in Washington with many younger alumnae in attendance. DLA coordinated its efforts with Washington area chapters of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association, the Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth, Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association and Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Alumni/ae Association. The event included a networking reception and a panel discussion moderated by Howard Morse ’81 on the topic of “Legal Issues Facing the Startup from the Inside.” Among the attorney panelists was Keith Rosten, Tu’89. Jennifer Burdman ’98, Trisha Grant ’04 and Xander Meise ’01 organized the event hosted by the law firm of King & Spalding.
On December 1 more than 600 Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., alumni, parents and guests were invited by President Philip Hanlon ’77 and his wife, Gail Gentes, to attend a reception and conversation at the World Bank’s headquarters in D.C. hosted by Dartmouth president emeritus and World Bank president Jim Yong Kim. The conversation portion of the program focused on the topic “The World’s Troubles Are Our Troubles: How Dartmouth Prepares Global Leaders.” Hanlon and Kim announced the creation of a new academic cluster at Dartmouth, made possible by major alumni gifts totaling $15 million, to explore the fundamental causes and consequences of extreme poverty. Featured alumni guests included U.S. Sen Kirsten Gillibrand ’88, U.S. representatives John Carney ’78 and Ann McLane Kuster ’78, former Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. CEO and Dartmouth trustee chair Ed Haldeman ’70 and current trustees chair Bill Helman ’80. The Gospel Choir performed during the event.
On August 30 the Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Silicon Valley (DAASV) hosted a summer afternoon sail out of the Golden Gate Yacht Club around picturesque San Francisco Bay aboard the touring replica of the historic racing schooner America. About 25 Dartmouth alumni, parents and guests joined members of the local Harvard and Yale clubs for the cruise. DAASV participants included Val Armento ’73, Tod Bensen ’84, Gregory ’86 and Lynn Tracy ’86 Nerland, Ricardo Alfaro II ’57, Marsha and Bill Adler ’68, Adam Grounds ’16, Charline and Stephen Douty ’82, Ian Christoph ’81, Lucile Irwin ’81, Bob and Leslie Finertie ’77, Andrew Pei ’11, Sharon and James Bach ’75 and James von Rittmann ’95, the event organizer.
