On May 11 the MALS program held a reception at the Hanover Inn to honor the publication of the new MALS journal. Students, alumni and faculty were invited. Chief editors Emily Hedges (MALS’16) and Amanda “Spo” Spoto (MALS’16) were on hand to explain the journal’s new name, Clamantis, and new format. The name, of course, is taken from Dartmouth’s motto: vox clamantis in deserto (“the voice of one crying out in the wilderness”). In this first edition the editors end their address to the reader with the words, “We hope all MALS students past and present see themselves within the pages of our journal. This publication belongs to the students always ready to cry out, to shout, to claim, to reinvent. The truth is out there and our voices are determined to find it.” The journal will be published each spring and fall term with new cover art for each issue.
Anna Minardi (MALS’10) serves as the faculty advisor. In the editors’ words, “We showcase the strongest creative and critical work submitted by current MALS students as well as MALS alumni. We believe that by selecting and integrating work from all four ofthe program’s concentrations, we will promote intellectual engagement, fruitful questioning and honest discourse within the realm of liberal studies.” Questions, comments and submissions by alumni should be emailed to: the.mals.journal@dartmouth.edu.
The Dartmouth Graduate Studies Investiture ceremony was held on June 11, the day before Commencement exercises, in the Berna. Graduates, family and friends gathered in the rather damp weather for the celebratory event. The recognition of 2016 award recipients included the presentation ofthe Byam Shaw-Brownstone MALS Thesis Excellence awards by Professor Donald Pease, the chair of the program. There were two prizewinners in
each of the four MALS concentrations. Amira Hamouda (MALS’16) and Robert Alex Kaufman
(MALS’16) received the awards for creative writing. Oludamilola Osinbajo (MALS’16) and Amanda Marie Spoto were awarded in the cultural studies concentration. The general liberal studies awards went to Susan Elizabeth Bibeau (MALS’16) and Howard Cleave Carter (MALS’16) and the globalization studies awards were won by Enoch Mahama Holu (MALS’16) and Gregory Michael Noddin Poulin (MALS’16).
The recognition of award recipients was followed by student addresses from Erin A. Brioso (MALS’16) and Gifford J. Wong (Adv’16). Gifford Wong was the recipient of the Gary B. Malone 1970 Memorial Award.
