The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Alumni Council held its annual commencement reception on June 13, a glorious spring day. It was absolutely perfect for celebrating endings and new beginnings. The event was attended by 2004 graduates, their families, friends, faculty and by many MALS alumni. Nance Silliman '95 (MALS'96) coordinated the party with the help of Judy Chypre (MALS'99), Joan Kersey (MALS'96) and Phyllis Nemhauser (MALSO3). Mike Beahan (MALS'97), Alumni Council board president, was on hand for a champagne toast to the new graduates. Also enjoying the champagne was Arnold Castagner (MALS'79), who recently retired from the alumni board and is very pleased to no longer to be responsible for lugging the bottles of bubbly from Dan and Whit's. We were all pleased to see Grace Hill (MALS'7S). Grace recently lost her husband, who was for many years a regular celebrant at our annual gala. She reports she is doing well and was escorted to the event by her granddaughter, a valuable member of her support system. Maggie Montgomery (MALS'99), became our official photographer, and Frank Anthony (MALS'B4) also joined the festivities.

Many of the new graduates are already hard at work in the next step of their careers, but Allen Sherman (MALS'O4) has first to recover from his thesis experience before he pursues a future combining teaching and writing. Agnes Anna Zephyr (MALS'O4) intends to continue what she has been doing: working in the library at Dartmouth and, of course, writing. Pamela Bouchard (MALS'O4) will also remain in the area and will work on another degree from Dartmouth. C.J. Freehan (MALS'O4) is headed to Berkeley, California, to begin law school this fall. She plans to spend the summer skiing in British Columbia. Ashby Anderson (MALS'O4) will return to his real life of teaching sixth grade in Washington, D.C. He, too, intends to keep writing, when he is not occupied with being a superlative father to his daughter. Benjamin Bolger (MALS'O4) is already working toward a doctorate at Harvard. He had nothing but the highest praise for the MALS program. He feels his studies at Dartmouth on urban inequalities helped pull together his previous two masters degrees in political science and sociology and pointed him toward his Ph.D. work, which will be on urban planning and real estate development. Lori Heather Mitchell (MALS'O4) will return to Chicago and a job in nonprofit relations for a real estate investment firm.

Lorenzo Sempere Ferrandez (genetics'04) celebrated his graduation with his friends from the MALS program. His next step was his wedding, scheduled a week after receiving his degree. He and his wife, Elena, plan to spend the summer honeymooning and visiting relatives in Spain and Russia. They will return to Dartmouth in the fall. Lorenzo will begin postdoctoral work with Charles Cole in the biochemistry department, where Elena is working toward her degree.
