Modern drainage renders this 1938 scene obsolete, but duckboards used to be a fixture on the Green every March. They were the only way to avoid the spring slop, which coincided with an annual dance dubbed “The Duckboard Drag.” No longer needed in the 1950s, many duckboards found their way into a Homecoming bonfire.
