Two extraordinary incidents of interest to Dartmouth men occurred in Rochester this winter. One hundred sixty-five inches of snow fell and president Dickey almost lost his voice.
The lost-voice episode occurred on March 23, when President Dickey came to Rochester for the annual Dartmouth Club Dinner. We just never let him stop talking. (The snow resulted from an over enthusiastic Toronto sirocco blowing across Lake Ontario.) From the airport, President Dickey was taken to a press luncheon, arranged and directed by Frank Hutchins '45 with customary dexterity, at which representatives of the press, radio, and television asked questions for three hours. From there, President Dickey went to talk with area candidates for admission and their parents. And then, of course, it was time for the dinner, where, with electronic help, he told us of the new conceptions of teaching and learning at Dartmouth.
The high point of the evening was President Dickey's announcement that John Norris '25 had that morning accepted the post of Co-Chairman of the Dartmouth College Medical School Fund Drive with the responsibility of raising five million dollars. Dr. Norris, a graduate of the Medical School and Associate Director of Medicine of Eastman Kodak Company, was chosen, the President explained, because he typifies the sort of physician that the Dartmouth Medical School seeks to produce.
Annual reports followed the dinner. JohnOsborn '45, chairman of the enrollment committee, announced that his press gang (more than half those attending the dinner when they stood up) had received 52 completed applications, an increase of 29 over last year, and that Chet Barry '40 and the interviewing committee had completed all interviews. Ralph Watkins '51 was commended for his DARTMOUTH DATELINE ROCHESTER, the brand-new house organ for Rochester Dartmouths. Dr. Joe Kepes '46 was thanked for his part in initiating another publication - a local alumni directory. Nancy Carey (attended Dartmouth, but did not; graduate) reported a very successful first. year for the Dartmouth Wives Club and presented President Dickey a check for $90, the' net receipts of a bridge night for the ladies (and a few misguided gentlemen), to add to the Rochester Regional Scholarship Fund.
Ed Leene '43, head of the nominating com- mittee, proposed the new slate of officers, whom he then democratically railroaded into office. Phil Hahn '46 (armed with air pistols) will lead for the next year and Bob Schoonmaker '42 will assist. John Greisberger '46 (alumni secretary of the year and member of the Alumni Council) whom no one could do without, was reappointed Secretary, and EdKidd '53, who earlier reported that there was actually money in the check book, succeeded himself as Treasurer. Pete Sheddon '40 was elected Assistant Treasurer to verify Ed's report, and your Humble Servant '52 became assistant Greisberger. Elected to the Board of Directors were Bill Hale '43, Dr. HenryCrawford '25, Pete Sheddon '40, Leon Sturman '30, Carl Shineman '33, Dr. Joe Kepes '46, and Jack Carey '49.
The final word belongs to Jack Varey '49, our out-going President whom we reluctantly deposed. Because of his enthusiasm, ingenuity, and industry, our Dartmouth Club had a very active and fruitful year. He has every good reason to be proud.
