Clubs & Groups

I hope that everyone is having a good fall. Dartmouth clubs and groups continued to bring alumni togetherwith a mix ofvirtual and limited in-person events as we navigate continually changing guidelines for gatherings.

Richard Hefler 72, president of the Dartmouth Club of St. Louis, wrote in to share news from the club’s first in-person gathering since the beginning ofthe COVID pandemic. Traditionally, the club holds a send-off party in late August for students heading back to campus. In 2020 the event was held via Zo om and had only a few p articip ants. This year the club hosted an event at the home ofthe Heflers and had a great turn out. Eighteen D artmouth alumni, ranging in class years from 1956 to 2024, attended and all had a great time. People seemed eager to get together in person again. The event was held in the Heflers’ backyard on a nice, warm afternoon in St Louis, Missouri. Alumni played cornhole and badminton and enjoyed great food and engaging conversations. Attendees included Larry Furrer ’56, Jim Lemen ’62, Bill Hobson ’66, Stephen Zegel ’66, Eliot Sherman, Tu’67, Don Wiviott 77, Luisa Figliola ’92, Ken Bower ’94, Sarah Hobson ’97, Brooking Gatewood ’05, Andrew Eastman ’07, Andrew King, Tu’19, Leann Bo, Tu’19, Josh Foster, Tu’19, Katheryn Caplinger ’20, William Boyce, DMS’20, and Grace V. Farr ’24. The club was pleased to have Lesley Wellman, the curator of education at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth from 1990 to 2016, also attend the gathering.

John Bash ’67, president ofthe Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee. Florida, wrote in to share that on June 21 Lt. Paul Cernansky ofthe Sarasota County sheriff’s office spoke to the club about law enforcement issues. Roger Stephenson ’60 invited the sheriff's deputy and Ed Mazer ’67 handled the technical aspects of Zoom. In addition, Big Apple Circus founder Paul Binder ’63, announced that an audio version of his book Newer Quote the Weather to a Sea Lion would be coming out shortly. Based on the results of a poll of members, the club plans to revert to in-person lunch meetings when the next season begins on October 15.

Thank you for continuing to share your news. Please stay safe and send me updates about the great events thatyour club, association, or affiliated group has organized.
