CLASS NOTES

Dartmouth clubs and groups have been busy organizing fun social and educational activities.

Jeffrey Carton ’88 shared news from the Dartmouth Lawyers Association. The club held a town hall-style get-together on May 24 presented by the Hon. Eric Taylor ’84 and the Hon. Michael Wil-

ner ’88 in which they shared their views from the bench on a variety of topics. On July 18 Lauren B. Emerson ’01, Alexandra Roberts ’02, and Carolyn Foley ’88 will present a program on the “Legal Implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence” and its impact on intellectual property protection. And this fall (October 5), the Hon. Beth Robinson ’86 and Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses ’78 will present (in person in Manhattan) a program in which they share their “Reflections from the Bench.”

David Dietze ’78, president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, shared that Joe Dempsey ’83 organized the club’s day of service for the club and local community food bank. In addition, Bill Cunningham ’78 organized the club’s tour in May of the Emilie K. Hammond Wildflower Trail at the Tourne County Park in Boonton Township. The “trail” is actually a fouracre area fenced in against deer with multiple trails. It contains a couple of hundred species of native wildflowers and plants and possibly 100,000 or more individual specimens.

Barry Weeks ’72, the executive director of the Dartmouth Club of New York (DCNY), shared that on March 28—thanks to Haila Asanaenyi ’02 of the Dartmouth Club of Houston and Dorothy Price Hill ’88, chair of the DCNY speaker series—the club presented a Zoom evening with former Dartmouth trustee Annette Gordon-Reed ’81. Her topic was “The Virginia Presidents.” Also participating were the Dartmouth Club of Dallas and the Dartmouth Club of South Texas. DCNY community service chair Soh Won Cha ’04 arranges a number of yearly service events, most recently partnering with the New York Junior League for projects in Marcus Garvey Park in East Harlem on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, and Saturday, May 13.

On May 24, 40 DCNY alums and guests enjoyed a D’art Blocks outing to see Life of Pi, produced by Daryl Roth, parent of a’93. It was a Broadway spectacular in everyway! Afterwards, Erik Ochsner ’93 arranged for a talk by six of the puppeteers. On June 1 DCNY and co-sponsor Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Alumni Association (DGALA) welcomed 30 alums and guests to see Kimberly Marable ’05 as Velma Kelly in Chicago. Next was atalk-back with Kimberly and cast, followed by a debrief at Lillie’s Victorian. This three-part event was also coordinated by Kimberly’s proud parents, Joan Marable ’76 and Ken Marable ’74!

Finally, congrats to the alums reelected at the DCNY annual meeting on June 20. Officers for two-year terms ending 2025 include Charles H. Allison Jr. ’78, president; Katie Paxton ’11, vice president; Evan B. Azriliant ’87, Esq., treasurer; Barry Weeks, secretary and executive director. Reelected to the executive committee for three-year terms ending in 2026 include Charles Allison, president; Soh Won Cha, chair, community service; Nicholas Chamousis ’73, Esq., vice president emeritus; J.T. Feeney ’82, chair, scholarship; Josiah Hannon ’15, chair, young alumni; Ken Marable. And congratulations to newly elected executive committee member George Dunston ’91, Esq., club governance.

Jeff Walters ’81 wrote that the Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia had a successful multi-club event on May 21, when more than 40 alums, parents, and guests from the club and the Dartmouth Club of Delaware sailed on the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel, a full-size replica of the vessel that brought the first European settlers to New Sweden (Delaware) in 1638. Attendees included James Nutt ’66, Tom Quinn ’70, Andrew Cassel ’72, Ron Heier ’74, David Lockard ’76, Cathy Cimina ’77, Louisa Guthrie ’79, Marlow Hicks ’79, Rick Leonardi ’79, Claire Johnston ’80, Jeff Walters, Sharon Watson ’84, David Puerto ’89, Dan O’Brien ’09. Katie Yang ’09, Nick Jain ’09, Alex Krienke ’20 and current student parents Steve and Maggie Burton and Christina Diaz.

John Bash ’67, president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee in Florida, reported that on May 19 the club featured a living history performance by Martha Bireda, Ph.D., re-enacting her great-grandmother Queen Andrews, a Black pioneer in Punta Gorda, Florida, called “the town that unity built” for its relative racial harmony and prosperity. Bireda is the mother of Jaha Cummings ’95, an international businessman, author, and Florida civic leader.

The club presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to Joel Berson ’49, a retired lawyer, and John Adler ’49, a retired businessman who published in 2022 America’s Most Influential Journalist: The Life, Times and Legacy of Thomas Nast. Both men were freshmen roommates and honors graduates and have remained lifelong friends and servants of the College. Fredric Jarrett ’63, M.D., previewed his class’ 60th reunion in June and noted that circus impresario Paul Binder ‘63 and former rugby and football star Bill Wellstead ’63 were working on a comical musical skit to be performed at that reunion.

Thank you for all you do for Dartmouth alumni!

Please send me updates about the great events that you and your club members have organized.
