Clubs & Groups
Dartmouth Clubs and Groups have been busy as always.
David Dietze ’78, president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, reports that big rouses are due for Jon Rabinowitz ’74 and Ed Rowland ’80. The club held its fall luncheon organized by Jon last October. Ed was the featured speaker, discussing his experiences in hiking the largest peaks in the Northeast. In August 2022 Ed became finisher No. 1,156 to complete the “Eastern 115” on the summit of Mount Washington. The Eastern 115 are the 115 peaks in New York (Adirondacks and Catskills), Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine greater than 4,000 feet. It was a journey of 52 years that started as a Boy Scout hiking in the Adirondacks and was reignited by climbing a few New Hampshire peaks prior to his 25th reunion in 2005. In addition, club officer Joe Dempsey ’83 organized the club’s “Day of Service” recently. Club members, other Dartmouth alums, family, and friends provided assistance to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the state’s largest anti-hunger and anti-poverty organization. The Community FoodBank provides more than 80,000,000 meals each year through its network of pantries, soup kitchens, mobile pantries, and child and senior feeding programs.
John Bash ’67, president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee, Florida, reports that on December 15,2023, visiting English professor Donald Pease gave a brilliant presentation on “Turning Points in Dartmouth History.” Geologist Dave Dobson ’76 recalled his memories of President John Kemeny’s accomplishments, such as the D-Plan and coeducation. Economics professor Martin Zimmerman ’67 praised Kemeny’s contributions to mathematics and computer science. The club honored current students and recent graduates. Trevor Geyer ’26, a member of the Cherokee Nation, talked about the Native American program. Johnny Reid ’23 said he is now studying for an M.B.A. at the University of South Florida and enjoying his last year of eligibility to run track following his sterling record at Dartmouth. In addition, Circus Hall of Famer Paul Binder ’63 contrasted Dartmouth’s educational approach to the Middle East crisis to that of some of our peer institutions. Financier Mike Meehan ’72 announced his sponsorship of an essay contest for current Dartmouth students to provide recommendations for K-12 public education. Club members highlighted the football team’s co-championship and the selection of Sammy McCorkle as Ivy Coach of the Year. The club also acknowledged Dartmouth recipients of Rhodes and Marshall scholarships.
Maria Cole ’84, president of Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association (BADA), wrote in to share several updates. The past months have been filled with celebrations, new beginnings, triumphs, challenges, and a steadfast commitment to the vision of a stronger, thriving, and vibrant BADA community. The club’s theme for action in the coming year is inspired by the Latin phrase, “aut viam inveniam aut faciam,” meaning, “we shall either find a way or make one.” BADA and its members are ready to play a pivotal role in enhancing Black student admissions, fostering mentorship, and engaging in initiatives that create a thriving intellectual community, extending Dartmouth’s influence far beyond Hanover—a vision aptly described by adopted alum and President Sian Beilock ’76 as “Dartmouth for life.” BADA members continue to serve alumni in roles at the College, within their respective classes, and through other opportunities such as Alumni Council. Congratulations to those who have taken on leadership roles, including Barry Caldwell ’82, who joined the Alumni Council executive committee, and Morris “Rocky” Whitaker ’74, who is the incoming president. Special appreciation goes out to Darrayl Cummings ’07 for his exceptional service to BADA on the Alumni Council and beyond. Darrayl will continue to contribute to the BADA leadership team, providing valuable insights and ideas for young alumni engagement. The club also extends gratitude to Luzi Robinson ’88 for her impactful work addressing food insecurity on Dartmouth’s campus as chair of the council’s service committee. David Cumberbatch ’84 and Alaina Smith Banerjea ’09 will represent BADA in the new term.
Thank you for all you do for Dartmouth alumni! Please send me updates about the great events that you and your club members have organized. —Stina Brock '01, P.O. Box 9274, Jackson, WY 83002; stina.brock@gmail.com
