There’s a certain kind of generosity that defines aparticular breed ofNew Yorker: young, living in an apartment with just about as much space as the city can offer, working intense hours in investment banking—and still good-natured enough to let an old roommate crash on the couch for the weekend. Lisa Wong is exactly that kind of generous. Despite returning home at ungodly hours during the week, Lisa was down for brunch on Saturday (what a trooper) and so we traipsed out to UT 47 Kitchen and Bar, a very chic spot with velvet barstools and those mini table lamps that illuminate with a tap of your finger. Lisa’s currently working at Bank of America, and she sits directly across from Jihwan Choi in the office. The two often reminisce about their time as undergrads and agree they’d do just about anything to relive those four golden years in Hanover. Their preferred topics of conversation include Dartmouth, Dartmouth, and—you guessed it—Dartmouth. Oh, and the managing director’s questionable toupee.
It was also great catching up with Lisa’s housemates: Christy Nguyen, Paul Cornell, and Justin Chong (whom I did not see as he was taking advantage of his company’s unlimited PTO, which I wholeheartedly endorse, and having the time of his life adventuring across Europe).
A few weeks ago I also met Grace Chen and Alex Ma for breakfast in Boston at the Tatte near Dartmouth Street—I can’t imagine a more fitting location. Over honey halva lattes and savory shakshuka, we celebrated Grace’s recent graduation from Cornell. She has just wrapped up her M.E. in mechanical engineering and will start work as a mechanical engineer at Meso Scale Diagnostics in new product development. Fun fact: She’s working at the same company as her father so they get to start the day together with a sweet father-daughter commute into the sleepy suburbs of Maryland! Alex, meanwhile, is working at the Dartmouth investment office and is looking forward to a summer trip to London with Vaani Gupta!
As for other classmate news, Mateo Perez was accepted in medical school and will be attending the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital (OHSU) School of Medicine in Portland, Oregon! He chose OHSU after having completed the Wy’east Medicine program, a tuition-free, postbaccalaureate health education pathway for American Indian and Alaska Native learners who are passionate about becoming physicians. As both a Pueblo student and the first in his family to attend medical school, he finds this milestone holds deep personal significance. Huge congratulations, Mateo!
Finally, a massive shoutout to Dani Armella for placing first in her age division at the Ironman race held inlier home country of Colombia! Forthose who are unfamiliar with the race, the Ironman is a grueling long-distance triathlon that includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2mile run. Dani completed it during a torrential tropical storm with 27 mph winds (seriously—are you even human?), while also managing to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Marbella, Spain, this November. Unreal. Congratulations, Dani, on a phenomenal accomplishment!
